4.0 out of 5 stars The Supersuckers are back from their country stint..., November 16, 1999
By
Josh (Fairfax Station, Va) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Evil Powers of Rock 'n' Roll (Audio CD)
The "Evil Powers Of Rock and Roll" is an excellent return to the path of evil for Satan's Cowboys. From the opening chord churning, and Eddie's proclamation "Got evil blood and a twisted mind" to the finishing " I will go down burning and yearning, alright, you'll be there too" the Supersuckers plow through 35 minutes and 2 seconds of gut wrenching rock and roll. Sit back, inhale the smoke of hell, and prepare to blast into the southwest. Chock full of sex, drugs, and violence. Awesome.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fall to Your Knees and Hail the Evil Powers of This Evil CD, November 28, 2001

How much do I love the Supersuckers? When I was stationed in Arizona I once drove 70 miles to Tucson just to get a picture of me standing on the front lawn of Santa Rita High. I saw these guys first in 1992 opening for L7 (oh, the humanity), and bought Smoke of Hell the next day, and wondered what could possibly top THAT. Then I got Los Manos Cornuda and said Holy Horned Hands, what could POSSIBLY be better than THAT!?! THEN Sacrilicious Sounds came out and just hearing "Born With A Tail" ONCE had me vibrating on a nirvanic plateau, a cresting and falling euphoric waveform which seemingly had no end (even if "19 Most Powerful Woman In Rock" put some turbulence into the approach pattern) and obviously, thought I, there can be no top for that. (...) I mean, I just don't know where to start... Okay, the title track, number one on the disc with a bullet to your brain, lays out the lay of the record's land in insidious Sucker style, and Oh my soul it's had a hold on me since play one. (...) And fret not, friends-- there is no "filler" on this album. None, nada, zippo. This is All-American Grade-A red meat ROCK with the blood from each cut oozing all over the plate. "My Kickass Life" cuts loose swingin' with all the gusto a loud-mouthed crackhead in an awesome rock combo like Spaghetti should. "Going Back To Tucson" is the tale of all those roadtrip moments where you're goin' home and something's gnawing at you, you're mulling over the shoulda-beens and near regrets you ever had back in the day as the landscape speeds by and the hot sun glares, only to finally say (forget about it) and crank up the radio. It also refocuses the enigma spotlight on Eddie-- what happened in his dark past that made the band leave Arizona for Seattle, and is it related to the tragedy of "Marie" from Sacrilicious Sounds of the Supersuckers? I wanna know! "Fisticuffs", "Dead Meat" and "Gone Gambling" comprise the unholiest tripych ever torn from the pages of White Trash Living Magazine; if "Doublewide" were on this record you'd have a (...) grand slam. Eddie and the boys are (as always) the cocksure, arrogant, swaggering, self-loathing juvenile delinquent Masters of their own destinies we all aspire to quit our day jobs and be, and funny as all Hell to boot. Pick this (...) up today, hoist your horned hand high and ROCK OUT!

4.0 out of 5 stars No ballads in sight...This one rocks HARD, June 21, 2000
By
This review is from: The Evil Powers of Rock 'n' Roll (Audio CD)
So, I'm in the record store looking at the new Supergrass CD when I spy Evil Powers. I've heard of the Supersuckers before, but never actually heard any of their music. I look closely at the cover. The title brings a big grin to my face. Then I notice 8 Marshall stacks and 2 Ampeg bass stacks. Plus a crazy looking dude in a cowboy hat. OK, this looks promising. Buy the CD. Rip it open and put in the car stereo. The opening riff of 'Evil Powers' kicks in. 'Got evil blood and a twisted mind...'. This CD just rocks hard from front to back. Not a weak track here. 35 minutes of bone crunching riffs, rapid fire barre chords, snarling solos and humorous lyrics. About as un-PC as possible. Which is a good thing. One last comment. The CD is mixed so that it sounds good even of crappy stereos. It's a low, bass heavy mix with thick, distorted guitars. Crunch is the best word I can think of. Buy it, you won't be disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars They're baaaaack!, November 29, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Evil Powers of Rock 'n' Roll (Audio CD)
Yes, indeedy...chock full of ripping guitar, big drums, snarling vocals, and even the occasional harmony - the 'suckers are back in all their evilness. They've captured all the energy of their live shows with just a touch of spit and polish - definitely one of the best studio recordings they've ever done. Play it LOUD to ward off the goodness that threatens to ruin Rock-n-Roll.

5.0 out of 5 stars Do Not Hesitate on this evil lil' pup, January 26, 2000
This review is from: The Evil Powers of Rock 'n' Roll (Audio CD)
Do you remember the first time you heard AC/DC "Back In Black" and the feeling of pure evil power it gave you? This CD is a testament to the very essence of truly great rock music, just look at the title and believe - it's truth in advertising. It virtually SMOKES from beginning to end - not a wasted second here. This CD will make your speakers ooze out an evil smoke that'll ruin the rest of your CDs and it'll leave a smell that could make your local police officers very suspicious. If you like Rocket From The Crypt, AC/DC, early/heavy Jason and the Scorchers or Groop Dogdrill, you'll become erected with this 'un. This CD will even teach that hellhound on your trail some new tricks and you'll both be begging for more.

4.0 out of 5 stars The lost art of rock and roll., March 6, 2003
By
Jack Knife (Pittsburgh, PA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Evil Powers of Rock 'n' Roll (Audio CD)
First off, this CD is full of awesome no apologies, in your face rock and roll. Period. They are doing it better than anyone out there today. The Supersuckers know exactly who they are and what they want to be, rock and roll juggernauts in the vein of AC/DC, Motorhead, and the Ramones. They even tell you that to your face at a live show. And they will not stray from that for you or I. So you have no excuse. For all of you music "purists" or people bent on pushing musical boundaries, please stay away from this album. It is rife with rock and roll cliche, power chords, songs about drinking, fighting, and gambling. Take this CD for what it is and do not attempt to analyze it any way shape or form. Just enjoy the friggin' thing. Makes me want to grow a Fu Manchu, mutton chops, and get some big old mirrored shades. And be damn proud of it.

5.0 out of 5 stars If it ain't evil, it ain't Rock'n'Roll., September 12, 2006
This review is from: The Evil Powers of Rock 'n' Roll (Audio CD)
1999 was the year. I was burned out on all the Death Metal I had been listening to in that decade. I thought to myself "what the hell else is there worth a crap?" I still love the Metal but damn, I needed a change and the Social Distortion and Reverend Horton Heat discs just weren't enough. I ultimately discovered "Hitlist" magazine (oddly enough, because of the "Politics of Black Metal" cover story) and the rest is history. There were still real Rock'n'Roll bands out there and they were dying to be heard. I don't remember which issue it was, but I saw an ad for "The Evil Powers of Rock'n'Roll". Holy sh..oes! Now THAT'S Rock'n'Roll!!

I'm one cheap bum and I rarely (if ever) actually purchase brand new discs but this one had classic written all over it.

Judging solely from the album cover, title, song titles and pics I actually paid my hard earned moolah to buy this brand new. There was no way I could be dissappointed.

From the very first riff's of "The Evil Powers of Rock'n'Roll" I was hooked. I immediately noticed the wah-heavy guitar on this, my first, Supersucker experience. They had the hooks, the sound, the vocals, the solid drumming and the image of what IS Rock'n'Roll! At the end of the song I heard the unmistakable Ozzy tribute of "Believer" and it just couldn't get any better. Who exactly were these Supersuckers and why hadn't I heard of them up to this point??

"I call it Cool Man.....(cool)...................Chu". My god, why has it taken so long for a band to come along and get practically everything right? The dramatic buildup is there for a reason and the Supersuckers nailed it!

"I want the Drugs" What a Rock'n'Roll title! "Would you say that your songs are about liquor, women, drugs and killing for the most part?"......"Yep." That makes me smile, and I don't smile much. Great!

Too keep this short I'll skip to the highlights. "You can't mistake me, or mistake my kind".

"Stuff "n" Nonsense" is the finest love song ever recorded. A true love song doesn't have to be a slow lame ballad as long as the feeling is there.

"Traded the desert for the rain", I love real life stories and pickup trucks. "I don't know why, I guess I'm old school", so am I. "Goin' Back to Tucson" is a wonderful song.

The album finishes appropriately enough with the grand finale of "Hot Like the Sun" with an almost epic-like quality. This is how a landmark album SHOULD be done.

The Supersuckers covered all the bases on this one and I can't recommend this album enough. If you don't have it, get it! I used to play this disc all the time in the garage at work trying to get others hip. I'm surprised that I haven't burnt a hole it yet. 5 stars without a doubt. In a real Rock'n'Roll world, this disc would have topped the charts. I like to think of this album as the album that Gun's 'n' Roses didn't have the balls to make.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beacon of ROCK shining through the darkness, January 23, 2004
This review is from: The Evil Powers of Rock 'n' Roll (Audio CD)
This is without a doubt one of the finest rock albums of all time. As good as the other SS albums are, this one takes the cake. The title track is like the best burrito you've ever had - thick, juicy, tasty and full of beans. "I Want the Drugs" is bombastic and fast, I mean, could go on, but won't because if you're reading this you're not ordering it, and the sooner you order it, the sooner you'll get it and then you'll be able to hear for yourself why this.... is..... R... O... C... K...

5.0 out of 5 stars Real head banging stuff!, February 25, 2008
This review is from: The Evil Powers of Rock 'n' Roll (Audio CD)
I recently bought this album for a mate's 50th birthday present as I already had a copy of this album which I bought for myself in 1999 & my mate happened to hear me playing this album & decided it was brilliant so he certainly won't be disappointed.

When I first heard this album I thought it was the best rock n roll album since Motorhead's Ace Of Spades & the M3t3ors In Heaven albums released back in the 80s. There are only 5 rock n roll bands that give me a buzz & whenever these bands bring out new material I'm never disappointed. They are Motorhead, The M3t3ors, The Ramones, AC/DC & of course Supersuckers. I have seen all these bands live & the atmosphere at any of these bands gigs is just electrifying!

I recommend the Evil Powers of Rock N Roll to anyone who is a hard rock fan & a fan of any of the 5 bands that I have mentioned above. Supersuckers are a punk/metal band with a bit of country music thrown in & certainly not for the faint hearted. This album though is as the album title suggests, from start to finish, hard & fast rock n roll with the amps turned up! I didn't think bands could still produce such exciting rock n roll but Supersuckers proved me wrong! For anyone who is a punk/metal/psychobilly fan this album is a must!

4.0 out of 5 stars REAL ROCK N ROLL, April 20, 2005
By
Mirror Man (Staten Island, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Evil Powers of Rock 'n' Roll (Audio CD)
The Supersuckers continue to impress. On their album "The Evil Powers of Rock and Roll" these guys lay down some mean, clean riffs with rythmic punch. I agree with some of the other reviewers Blink 182, Green Day, Sum 41 are total jokers - this stuff is the real deal. The Supersuckers have a grasp on what makes rock and roll so exciting; when it's done with humor, crunch and sincerity. Toss in a little irony too. Sadly, you get the feeling that great rock n roll is becoming a lost art form; or simply put, going more underground while the Maroon 5's of the world rise to the top. Yecch! So raise your Los Manos Cornuda's and rock out! This stuff is immortal!
