3.0 out of 5 stars Fred Olen Ray's Take On The Wasp Woman, July 27, 2009
This review is from: Evil Spawn (DVD)
Bobbi Bresee is a washed up actress who can't land roles anymore coz of her age(though I can't quite see why coz she's hot). Things start looking up for her though when she's given an experimental drug by some shady woman. The drug promises youth, and of course Bobbi Bresee can't resist. What exactly this drug is, what the shady woman's motivations are, and why this drug was given to Bresee in the first place are never fully explained. We know this drug is bad news, and the film's intro, which features footage of a spaceship, hints that this serum was made from alien organisms.
Well, the drug makes her younger(though I didn't see a difference) and more confident, but the down side is that it makes her violent. It also turns her into a kind of giant humanoid insect that looks like something you'd see at a GWAR concert.
It's typical Fred Olen Ray, which is to say it's entertaining, and CHEAP. Since this was released on Ray's Retomedia label, I'm sure he made every effort to make sure the quality was the best, but the film looks grainy, fuzzy and plain bad. The extras are nice though. A documentary on the film, outtakes, commentary and Fred Olen Ray's Nite Owl Theater(a regular feature on many Retromedia DVDs), which as always is silly but fun.
Evil Spawn isn't one of Ray's better films, but it does deliver the goods for those looking for low budget trash.

4.0 out of 5 stars [Breasts] and Blood, January 20, 2002

I have always liked this film and saw it many years ago on cassette, but seeing the widescreen version is even better. This is a cheesy film starring sexy Bobbi Bresee as an actress who takes an aging drug and turns into an insect monster. Goofy as hell but VERY VERY enjoyable. Has some interesting things on the disc such as trailers, behind the scenes shots and another episode of Nite Owl Theater with Fred Olen Ray and Miss Kim. A highly recommended DVD that does not disappoint.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get out the raid!, March 23, 2007

This is a great flick. The lovely Bobbi Bresee (who, admittedly, I've never seen anywhere else) is having fits about getting old and not getting good acting jobs. A scientist (who is evidently a severe fan of Ms Bresee) gives the actress an anti-aging serum, made from alien microbes, which turn our heroine into a huge insect. The acting is occasionally atrocious (from the louder is better school), but the monster is cool, and the ladies are luscious! John Carradine even shows up for a few seconds. The Nite Owl Theater episode is fun, too.
