5.0 out of 5 stars One Great Singer and An All Around Great Guy, November 8, 2002

James Hand continues to define what country music is and ought to be. I have the honor and priviledge of knowing and playing music with James Hand and I consider him a true and trusted friend. Mr. Hand's unique singing style and truly sincere personality fill me with a level of comfort when I am around him. His heart-wrenching ballads continue to make me shudder, the first I hear them and each time thereafter. The quirky up-beat songs get my blood going and make me want to tap my toes. I can honestly say that if you love good country music and appreciate having a man bear his soul to you, then you should definitely consider purchasing this CD or any other which bears the name James Hand on it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Real country here, October 8, 2002

I first saw James Hand in his hometown of Tokio when I was 18. I'd never heard anything like it before and still haven't. If you close your eyes, you'd think it WAS Hank Williams, Sr. His songs come from a place where not many people can reach, and definitely not a place that those pseudo-country, Nash-vegas pop artists can reach. This is what country music was once all about and still is for some people.

5.0 out of 5 stars A natural country artist, June 17, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Evil Things (Audio CD)
I have seen James Hand live on several occasions and own both of his CD'S. James has a natural talent for real country music. His music is original and comes from the heart. I enjoy to hear someone who is real, and you can hear his pain in his music. His voice is unique, although it does have traces if Hank Wuilliams Sr. Anyone who enjoys real country music will love his CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Got soul?, August 20, 2002

James Hand, with his distinctive quivering voice, has created a country music masterpiece. The soul of country music has found its home. I just hope it's not his last.

5.0 out of 5 stars Give Him A Hand, July 31, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Evil Things (Audio CD)
I received this album recently and it's a beauty. It's not as good as the "Truth Will Set You Free" (TWSYF) album but comes pretty close. It has 3 tracks that are on TWSYF (of course, first recorded here on this album)- "Don't Tell Me That", "Jukebox" and "The Truth Will Set You Free". The former two are done pretty much the same while the latter is done at a more up-tempo beat. That's not to say that they are inferior; just slightly different and still damn good.

The real gem on this album is "A Night Like Any Other". It's a classic honky tonk weeper done in the Ray Price Shuffle style with fantastic Tic-Tac bass. Dave Biller's production and guitar playing are top class and the band can really rock when they have to.

Between this and his TWSYF album James Hand has penned more classic country songs than most songwriters/artists write in a lifetime. He's right up there with Hank Williams, Harlon Howard, Lee-Roy Preston, Hank Cochran and their ilk. That's high quality indeed.

This is a fantastic CD and a must for anyone still hankering for that 40's and 50's honky-tonk country music done in a modern recording and playing style.

We saw James Hand in Austin two years ago and he jammed. The albums are the next best thing to seeing him live. Hearing James is like hearing a vibrant burst of the past.
