3.0 out of 5 stars Sounds like a long lost Conception album, November 4, 2009
This review is from: Evil (Audio CD)
Evil is the 2002 album from Time Machine, a long-running Italian progressive metal band. I was given a promo copy of Time Machine's 2004 album Reviviscenceand enjoyed it enough to seek out the band's other works. Their previous album seemed like a likely place to start, so I picked up Evil hoping to hear more of the intelligent, accessible progressive metal I heard on Reviviscence.

Maybe it's just me, but I couldn't get into this album like I did Reviviscence. On paper they're very similar. They're both conceptual, symphonic, Dream Theater-inspired progressive metal albums with first rate musicianship and solid vocals, but the impact just isn't the same. For some reason, Evil just fades into the background and never really made an impact on me. Maybe it's the concept (God vs. Evil and, um, the internet) that I'm just not getting. The album displays all of the hallmarks of the progressive metal genre, but not much in the way of power and emotion. Again, it probably has more to do with my tastes than Time Machine's talent. I prefer bands like Evergrey and Ark to Conception and (later) Fates Warning, and it's the latter two that I'm reminded of here.

I'd still definitely recommend Time Machine to fans of progressive metal, particularly bands like Labyrinth, Conception, Kamelot and of course Dream Theater and Fates Warning, but I don't know that Evil would make a very good starting point. I think that before I try any more of Time Machine's studio albums, I'll give the 2-disc Hidden Secrets anthology a try.
