Editorial Reviews

For the first time since it debuted on Broadway over 30 years ago, Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's seven-time Tony Award®-winning musical EVITA is back on Broadway. The production stars Grammy®-winning international superstar Ricky Martin as Ché, Olivier Award®-winning Argentinean actress Elena Roger making her Broadway debut as Evita and Tony Award®-winner Michael Cerveris as Juan Perón.

Masterworks Broadway proudly releases the New Broadway Cast Recording of EVITA, the first complete English language recording of the show since the original 1979 Broadway cast album. The 2-CD set is produced by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Nigel Wright, with Tim Rice as Executive Producer. It features a limited edition outer sleeve and includes a bonus track of Elena Roger performing Don t Cry For Me in Spanish ("No Llores Por Mi Argentina").

EVITA tells Eva Perón's passionate and tragic story through Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's most dazzling and beloved score which includes the songs "Don t Cry for Me Argentina," "Another Suitcase in Another Hall" and "High Flying Adored," together with "You Must Love Me," the Oscar®-winning hit from the film version of EVITA.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect? No. But really close... June 27, 2012
Format:Audio CD
My husband and I saw this production in April 2012 and thoroughly enjoyed it. I have directed "Evita" twice, so I am very familiar with the show, the characters, and the score. Many people like to use choice adjectives to describe Ms. Roger's voice. To say I disagree is an understatement. First of all, others who have performed (and recorded) this role have SCREAMED their way through the entire score. Ms. Roger does indeed use a full belt when necessary, but she employs a much greater emotional range than others who have played this role and she is not afraid to use her head voice, when appropriate. Ricky Martin is fantastic, as is the great Michael Cerveris. Rachel Potter as the Mistress is the only downside for me. She lacks the innocence in her voice required for the role. I am thrilled that they recorded the entire score. The arrangements are perfect! Not too many changes...just enough to really make it work. A+

5.0 out of 5 stars Top notch July 14, 2012
By David
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Having seen and thoroughly enjoyed the new Broadway production, this CD is a brilliant keep sake. Elena Roger is for me, just perfect. No, she isn't the stereotypical Broadway diva that produces huge notes at the end of every song, but she does demonstrate a huge pathos in the role of Eva. Ms Roger grows from the innocent Miss Duarte into the feisty, power hungry Evita. Her latin American heritage brings another dimension to this central role that so many will be familiar with.
A reviewer on Amazon refers to her rendition of 'Argentina" as a "mess" - I find this unbelievable. For the first time, in my experience, Elena delivers the song as it's meant to be - in the form of a speech. I found her performance on stage, and the recording, riveting; she is also a gifted dancer.
Ricky Martin delivers a solid vocal performance (there are a few Americanisms); Michael Cerveris is an excellent and slightly menacing Peron; Max von Essen sings Magaldi brilliantly, although not overly excited with Rachel Potter.
The company vocal arrangements are solid and the orchestrations are a joy to listen too. 'Buenos Aires' is stunning!
I think SONY have dealt a trump card with this release.
I hope Elena Roger will be around for many years to come. Her performances in 'Piaf' & 'Passion' is London were a treat to behold.
It's been some 30 years since the original Broadway cast album. I will always revere that version but for me, this CD is a new, fresh realisation of what I consider to be a masterpiece of musical theatre.

Play it loud! 10/10

5.0 out of 5 stars Goes Beyond All Expectations June 27, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
As a fan of the Madonna-Banderas 1996 film, I am well acquainted with all the songs, and know most of the lyrics by heart. To be honest, I waited for the release of this cd almost with trepidation, especially after viewing the cast perform two numbers on the street in front of 'Good Morning America' on April 12, 2012. Ms. Roger's voice was weak and often off-key. But as a friend pointed out, it was a damp, rainy morning and the principals probably had only a few hours sleep before their 8:20 a.m. performance on this morning show. So I bit my tongue and hoped for the best.

Well, worry no more! This recording is simply fantastic. Ricky Martin, Elena Roger, Michael Cerveris and the entire company have outdone themselves. It's one of the best Broadway albums I've heard in quite some time. What is particularly impressive (in addition to their outstanding voices) is the sharp diction applied to each lyric. I picked up on lyrics never heard before. It's a two-disc set. You won't be disappointed. In addition, there is a complete libretto enclosed--which is rarely supplied on original cast recordings.

If you wish to see some behind-the-scenes footage on the making of this excellent cd, check them out on youtube.

5.0 out of 5 stars Go see Evita!!! November 13, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I actually got to see this wonderful musical in person and I even got to meet Ricky Martin the night after I saw this play. I love the songs (honestly I only listen to the songs Ricky Martin sings). Ricky is really great in the musical and in this cd. His voice is wonderful and his dancing in the musical is awesome! My favorite song is "High flying adored" such a beautiful song and "And the money kept rolling in", very danceable. A must purchase for a Broadway fan, Evita fan, a Ricky Martin fan (like me), musical fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars A marvellous new complete recording of Evita October 30, 2012
By Yi-Peng
Format:Audio CD
I know that my fellow fans of musicals might put me in their black books for liking this new recording of Evita. One can tell that there has been a mixed reaction to this new recording and the Broadway revival that inspired it. However, this is still a marvellous cast recording of the complete musical and it is very well put together.

The controversy in this recording seems to be around Elena Roger's performance in the eponymous lead role. Yes I know that people have complained that she is no LuPone or Madonna. However, as someone from Singapore who has willingly given her a chance and who is not conditioned by LuPone and co, I'm pleased with Elena Roger's portrayal. I know that the part of Eva is strenuous and requires a belting alto who can shriek out the high notes and yet seduce softly with her voice the next minute. Elena Roger's portrayal is very convincing and suits the part well. She does strain on the top notes but it's all right. I know for sure that she sounds much more seasoned in playing the role of Eva than she did on the 2006 London recording. She does sound very conniving and scheming in her solos and occasional hissy fits, and I liked her rendition of Don't cry for me Argentina, as it had the spirit of an insincere political address. It's also lovely to hear You must love me in the stage musical, after the Waltz for Eva and Che and before Juan Peron sings She is a diamond. I might say that perhaps Elena Roger is closer to Julie Covington in the way she interpreted the role on the 1976 concept album.

I thought Ricky Martin fitted the role of Che quite well. This new production conceives the role differently from the original Harold Prince staging of the late 1970s.
