Editorial Reviews

For the first time since it debuted on Broadway over 30 years ago, Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's seven-time Tony Award®-winning musical EVITA is back on Broadway. The production stars Grammy®-winning international superstar Ricky Martin as Ché, Olivier Award®-winning Argentinean actress Elena Roger making her Broadway debut as Evita and Tony Award®-winner Michael Cerveris as Juan Perón.

Masterworks Broadway proudly releases the New Broadway Cast Recording of EVITA, the first complete English language recording of the show since the original 1979 Broadway cast album. The 2-CD set is produced by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Nigel Wright, with Tim Rice as Executive Producer. It features a limited edition outer sleeve and includes a bonus track of Elena Roger performing Don t Cry For Me in Spanish ("No Llores Por Mi Argentina").

EVITA tells Eva Perón's passionate and tragic story through Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's most dazzling and beloved score which includes the songs "Don t Cry for Me Argentina," "Another Suitcase in Another Hall" and "High Flying Adored," together with "You Must Love Me," the Oscar®-winning hit from the film version of EVITA.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect? No. But really close... June 27, 2012
Format:Audio CD
My husband and I saw this production in April 2012 and thoroughly enjoyed it. I have directed "Evita" twice, so I am very familiar with the show, the characters, and the score. Many people like to use choice adjectives to describe Ms. Roger's voice. To say I disagree is an understatement. First of all, others who have performed (and recorded) this role have SCREAMED their way through the entire score. Ms. Roger does indeed use a full belt when necessary, but she employs a much greater emotional range than others who have played this role and she is not afraid to use her head voice, when appropriate. Ricky Martin is fantastic, as is the great Michael Cerveris. Rachel Potter as the Mistress is the only downside for me. She lacks the innocence in her voice required for the role. I am thrilled that they recorded the entire score. The arrangements are perfect! Not too many changes...just enough to really make it work. A+

5.0 out of 5 stars Top notch July 14, 2012
By David
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Having seen and thoroughly enjoyed the new Broadway production, this CD is a brilliant keep sake. Elena Roger is for me, just perfect. No, she isn't the stereotypical Broadway diva that produces huge notes at the end of every song, but she does demonstrate a huge pathos in the role of Eva. Ms Roger grows from the innocent Miss Duarte into the feisty, power hungry Evita. Her latin American heritage brings another dimension to this central role that so many will be familiar with.
A reviewer on Amazon refers to her rendition of 'Argentina" as a "mess" - I find this unbelievable. For the first time, in my experience, Elena delivers the song as it's meant to be - in the form of a speech. I found her performance on stage, and the recording, riveting; she is also a gifted dancer.
Ricky Martin delivers a solid vocal performance (there are a few Americanisms); Michael Cerveris is an excellent and slightly menacing Peron; Max von Essen sings Magaldi brilliantly, although not overly excited with Rachel Potter.
The company vocal arrangements are solid and the orchestrations are a joy to listen too. 'Buenos Aires' is stunning!
I think SONY have dealt a trump card with this release.
I hope Elena Roger will be around for many years to come. Her performances in 'Piaf' & 'Passion' is London were a treat to behold.
It's been some 30 years since the original Broadway cast album. I will always revere that version but for me, this CD is a new, fresh realisation of what I consider to be a masterpiece of musical theatre.

Play it loud! 10/10

5.0 out of 5 stars Goes Beyond All Expectations June 27, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
As a fan of the Madonna-Banderas 1996 film, I am well acquainted with all the songs, and know most of the lyrics by heart. To be honest, I waited for the release of this cd almost with trepidation, especially after viewing the cast perform two numbers on the street in front of 'Good Morning America' on April 12, 2012. Ms. Roger's voice was weak and often off-key. But as a friend pointed out, it was a damp, rainy morning and the principals probably had only a few hours of sleep before their 8:20 a.m. performance. So I bit my tongue and hoped for the best.

Well, worry no more! This recording is simply fantastic. Ricky Martin, Elena Roger, Michael Cerveris and the entire company have outdone themselves. It's one of the best Broadway albums I've heard in quite some time. What is particularly impressive (in addition to their outstanding voices) is the sharp diction applied to each lyric. I picked up on lyrics never heard before. It's a two-disc set. You won't be disappointed. In addition, there is a complete libretto enclosed--which is rarely supplied on original cast recordings.

If you wish to see some behind-the-scenes footage on the making of this excellent cd, check them out on youtube.

5.0 out of 5 stars VIVA ELENA! January 17, 2013
Format:Audio CD
Although I sadly missed out on NYC, I did have the pleasure of seeing Elena Roger perform the show in London back in 2006. In a word: magnificent. Her fresh, vibrant take on the character breathed sensual life into Michael Grandage's elegant production. When I learned Ms. Roger was coming to New York, I was thrilled. It was a triumphant performance that she fully deserved, and it is gratifying to know that Michael Grandage's production, both in London and NYC, will be hers and hers alone.

This complete album is a welcome complement to the outstanding 1979 recording of the original Broadway run, which featured a sublime Patti LuPone in her career-defining performance. For me, Elena ascends to the ranks of Patti LuPone and Elaine Paige by imitating neither, delivering a performance that is entirely her own...no easy feat. Her distinct, folksy voice is absolutely perfect for the character of Eva Peron, at one moment sharp as a knife and the next as gentle and sensuous as a hand caressing your face...only for that hand to sharpen and cut you a mere second later. It was thrilling to watch and thrilling to listen to, and thankfully this album captures her complete performance better than the excellent London highlights one did.

The rest of the cast makes this a worthwhile listen as well. Michael Cerveris is a strong, commanding Peron, and Ricky Martin is a suave, charming (if a tad too earnest) Che. The three performers obviously have a great deal of respect for each other, as all three made the decision to leave together at the end of January 2013, with the show closing behind them.

Not everyone may have made it to NYC to see it, or London for that matter, but Sony Masterworks has provided a marvelous album to remember this glorious production by. I hope to see Ms.
