5.0 out of 5 stars This is a beautiful album.
I concur with two below reviews: it is wonderful to hear the opera in the original lanuage of the title character, and it is well worth [the money]... I didn't know it was available here as well, and it is a rare find... The orchestration is different from the original Broadway production. It has a much more "elegant" feel to it, much less of a Broadway "Rogers and...

3.0 out of 5 stars Terrific orchestrations, but Paloma mostly screams her songs
The best part of all this is that you hear this musical in the language that the original characters spoke. The Latino musical instrumentals & orchestrations are fantastic. But Paloma? She screams too much & can't hit the high notes! Patti Lupone is still the best Eva interpreter

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a beautiful album., March 3, 2002
This review is from: Evita (1980 Spanish Cast) (Audio CD)
I concur with two below reviews: it is wonderful to hear the opera in the original lanuage of the title character, and it is well worth [the money]... I didn't know it was available here as well, and it is a rare find... The orchestration is different from the original Broadway production. It has a much more "elegant" feel to it, much less of a Broadway "Rogers and Hammerstein musclebound production" feel to it; this production is more understated and has a more "refined" feel to it.

The "Evita" of the Original Broadway Recording often seems like a caricature of the historical Evita - a somewhat campy, vicious, and unsympathetic rendition. Paloma San Basilio's "Evita" is a little more humanized. It is inevitable, then, that Patti Lupone's Broadway version would be a more forceful interpretation and therefore more powerful and memorable. It is probably best, therefore, to not try to compare the two renditions but to judge them on their own merit.

Sometimes Paloma San Basilio's voice can get a little "screechy" for me, a little too sugary. But in some places her voice is delicious, beautiful, and elegant. Now, I wonder how it would sound if we could insert Patti LuPone into this production and hear her sing the score in Spanish . . . something to think about; okay, maybe not. Anyway, I would recommend this CD to any fan of the musical, and to anyone interested in the Spanish language.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Evita, February 3, 2003

I'm a really big fan of the rock opera Evita and am acquainted with the major English language productions, but when I heard Paloma San Basilio's recording, I was hearing the music for the first time again. The pulse of the Spanish soul resounds in every beat: the proud bravado, the romanticism, and the heart-wrenching melancholy will sweep you away. I listen to it every day! It is such a superb recording, I hardly ever listen to it in English any more. Paloma San Basilio is magnificent! She is Evita. The rest of the cast is excellent as well. If you know Spanish, you will love this "Evita"; otherwise, learn Spanish -it's worth it just for this recording!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent musical, January 9, 2003

The entire cast of this Spanish Evita CD are superb. The music itself is excellent, it is fasr away enough from any other version to be pretty much original (even though this was recorded after the Concept, London and Broadway versions of the musical).

The leading lady is superb, although on occasion she seem a bit unable tp keep up with the pace. The orchestra make an excellent attempt at the score, it is very latin, and as I said far away form any other version recorded.

If you are a fan of Evita then this is a MUST, even if you cant understand Spanish it is enough just to listen to the musical score itself.

I couldn't agree more with the other reviewers - this is the ultimate Evita recording. I love Patti and Mandy but the softness and beauty of these arrangements make this the best version of this show. I would have died to have seen it!!! Hang the expense! If you love Evita, you will love this.

5.0 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFUL AND TOUCHING, June 2, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Evita (1980 Spanish Cast) (Audio CD)
HEARING THE SOUNDTRACK IN SPANISH HELPED ME BETTER VISUALIZE EVA'S STORY (ALTHOUGH, OF COURSE AND UNDERSTANDABLY, THERE ARE BIG SHORT-CUTS TAKEN TO TELL HER LIFE STORY) BEAUTIFULLY COMPOSED AND TRANSLATED, ALTHOUGH I WOULD HAVE PREFERED NOT USING THE "HUMORISTIC" APPROACH OF THE BROADWAY PLAY, BUT THE MORE SERIOUS TONE OF THE LONDON RECORDING. PALOMA IS FANTASTIC AS EVA; IN MY OPINION SHE IS THE PERFECT CAST.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE BEST OF THE BESTS !!!!!!!!!!, February 23, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Evita (1980 Spanish Cast) (Audio CD)
I HAVE LISTENED THIS MASTER PIECE IN SPANISH ( AND THE OTHERS TOO: AMERICAN & ENGLISH VERSIONS) BUT THERE IS NO COMPARISON WITH THE OTHERS. YOU HAVE TO LISTEN TO "BUENOS AIRES"( and the others 22 songs) AND ENJOY THE WONDERFUL LATIN INSTRUMENTS, AND PALOMA SAN BASILIO'S GREAT VOICE. IT IS A MAGICAL PERFORMANCE. IF YOU LIKE THIS MUSICAL, YOU MUST HAVE THIS VERSION. EVEN IF IT IS NOT YOUR LANGUAGE; YOU WILL ENJOY IT!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best version of Evita, August 10, 2005
This review is from: Evita (1980 Spanish Cast) (Audio CD)
This version was the first that I heared of this opera. Later I heared some other versions and no one of them sounds like that. Paloma San Basilio gives a extreme energy to the character of Evita. The instrumental arrangements are fine too. If you don't understand the spanish, you'll enjoy the music. I recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, but Brazilian Version with Claudia is the best of them all., May 20, 2009

Paloma's vocals are amazing, I dare to say, having listened to ALL of the Evita's recordings and arrangements that she is the second best, because the first one ( better tham Patti and Elaine Page and even Paloma ) is Claudia Oliveira - the Brazilian actress that played Evita's role in 1982 and in 1986. The only one that sings with power and energy needed for the role. And in addition to that, Claudia is the only one that sings the "one star quality" phrase with amazing high notes, different from all others, that cannot reach such crystal and clean notes and just lower their voices to sing in a descendant scale... That's a shame they didn't remastered Claudia's recording. I love Paloma's recording but CLAUDIA IS THE BEST Evita theaters have seen and heard EVER!

5.0 out of 5 stars An instant classic, April 30, 2006
By
This review is from: Evita (1980 Spanish Cast) (Audio CD)
Since the first moment it was adapted from the English version, its genuine Latin sounds as a result and the powerful interpretation of all artists involved, has made this the best Evita interpretation so far. Superior by far...and a classic.
