Gerritsen reconciles historical systems, April 18, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Evolution in Color (Paperback)
After a semester of reading and working from this complex book, my advanced painting students and I can say confidently that Gerritsen is worth the devotion it takes to do his diagrams and discuss his conclusions. In his own color perception diagram (pp. 46 and 47), he reconciles historical understanding of color -- the ancient Greeks, Goethe, Newton, Maxwell, Munsell, etc. We find it refreshing and informative to see that human beings have observed color faithfully for millenia, making perceptive notes about its nature. They have (we have) all seen color in varied contexts, and bringing those contexts into a unified view helps all of us. Gerritsen's color perception schemes produce logical puzzles that we grew wiser by solving. This is a book the student of color theory will return to again and again.
