Good value metal cutting saw (but forget about the laser guide),

This review is from: Evolution Power Tools FURY3 8-1/4-Inch Multipurpose Cutting Compound Sliding Miter Saw (Tools & Home Improvement)
I purchased this saw to cut 2"x2" (.083) square steel tube. It works well for that task. I took the multipurpose blade off and replaced it with a dedicated steel blade - I expect the life of the multipurpose blade would be quite poor (in steel). If you are only cutting metal occasionally it might work ok.It does spit very hot, angry steel chips back at you so a full face guard or goggles are a must (unless you like blue-hot steel chips in your eye). One problem - after less than 10 cuts the spray of steel chips damaged the lens on the laser guide (plastic) to the point where it was no longer useful as a laser - now it was more of a dim red mood light. A call to Evolution revealed that they know about this problem. They have no solution. So if you are cutting metal just forget about the laser guide. Also, this is really a light duty saw (only weighs around 30lbs) - don't expect a heavyweight miter saw for the fairly low price they charge. Still a good value though. ******* UPDATE 4/1/2011 ******** Saw is now dead. Was in the middle of a cut and the motor stopped. Now it has to go back for warranty work. Not good.

Evolution as a whole,
This review is from: Evolution Power Tools FURY3 8-1/4-Inch Multipurpose Cutting Compound Sliding Miter Saw (Tools & Home Improvement)
I worked for Evolution for a long period of time fixing these same miter saws and all of the others in their line including the Rage power tools. All of them have a genuine problem with durability and most would be returned within months of purchase due to electrical problems. What became a serious problem that was never taken seriously was on the chop saws the arm would literally snap in half. Sometimes this would happen when in the middle of a cut (take a second to imagine that nightmare) and others would come straight out of the box like that. Please save yourselves alot of time and aggrevation and go elsewhere.

Has cut thru metal, wood, and plastic with ease. All it needs is a mobile stand and it would be the perfect tool for the garage.

I purchased this saw due to what it says it can do. Cuts almost anything, sounded interesting, I was drawn in. What I found is that I do not have a miter saw at all. The reason I say that is this saw did not cut square right out of the box. Another reviewer noted the same issue and as he said, the reason to use a miter is for square cuts. For cutting studs or anything that will be hidden it works well. For trim or anything you need to look nice it is a total piece of junk.

Was shopping for an abrasive chop saw to cut metal for odd jobs around the house. I saw the Evolution Rage reviews on Amazon. With a little more research saw the Evolution Fury3; I immediately wanted it. Great price, quick shipping turnaround. I've used it for a couple jobs making workbenches (one metal, one wood) for my workshop. Did both jobs admirably with out having to change the blades. I have recommended it to a couple friends already. Great product.

I am not a construction worker and not too sure how this product will hold in a heavy work load but for me it was just perfect. It is pretty nice for the price and I used it a lot since bought it and still did not change the blade. I have never cut metal with it so I am not sure what will happen if you do so.

Purchased this saw a month ago. It arrived in about a week. Upon opening the box I discovered there is a screw missing (the one needed to fasten the extension support on the right side. A call to the customer service ended up they did not know what screw it is! Anyway, need to make a trip to Home Depot to buy one. The saw cannot make a perfect cross cut on 2x4, there is about 1 to 2/16" off, not perfect. The saw blade did cut metal and wood, but the surface is not very smooth, need to sand it a little bit. For around the house projects, it is well capable. If you want to do more complicated and precise works, buy the more expensive ones made by Dewalt or Makita.

I ordered this saw about a month ago. Since I got it I've used it extensively to make some wooden carts and such for my shop. The laser is very accurate and the saw zips right through the wood. I've also used it to cut plastics and it leaves a decent edge when used in this manner. Where this saw really falls short is in aluminum and steel. Even cutting very thin bar stock leaves a ragged edge. Aluminum, which I use a lot of in projects, does not fare well under this blade. It leaves a jagged edge as if the blade wobbles in the cut. I first thought it was my original blade, contacted Evolution, and was shipped a new one. The second blade, while worlds better than the first, still leaves a jagged edge after a cut. It doesn't matter whether you are cutting thin angle iron, or aluminum bar stock or thin plate. The final edge is rough, and would require either grinding or filing to be used in a project. This saw does not leave a production ready edge as I was informed both by reviewers and the company's website. Very dissatisfied. I really wish I had kept my horizontal bandsaw. It left a near perfect cut and, while it took much longer, was a much better tool. You are warned.Update: Having used this saw for quite some time in plastics, steel, aluminum, and several different types of wood I will elaborate on my initial review. I have noticed the following cons concerning the saw I received (your milage my vary, but this review is for MY saw). The first con is a deal killer for anyone wanting a straight cut in short stock. If you're cutting longer stock that's supported by a stand, you would be ok. Cons - 1. The miter turn-table and the side supports on the right and left of the saw frame are not level. I'll repeat that. The side supports and the miter turn-table are NOT level. This makes getting a straight cut or precise angled cut (the whole purpose of the miter saw) impossible. This is the number one reason I will stick with my rating of 1 star. This represents poor quality control. 2. The blade that came with my saw was total garbage. It wobbled more than .040 of an inch. Anyone that knows anything about making precise cuts in metal, knows that that is absurd. I called Evolution and after hashing it out on the phone with them (they wanted me to ship the saw back at my expense for calibration), they sent me a new blade. The new blade wobbled more than .030 of an inch. Still unacceptable. That is when I changed to the Oshlun blade referenced in my response to this review comment. My advice would be to toss the blade that comes with it, order an Oshlun when you buy the saw on here, and use that combo. Disclaimer: This review is of the saw I received. Maybe I received a poor example of this company's product. I hope your saw is better. I admit that my initial review might have been a bit harsh, but after using the saw for a while, I still stick with 1 star.

Small details not in the instructions.1. You need a 13mm wrench or socket. The "spanner" in the box doesn't give much leverage. 2. The nut tightens to the left (counter-clockwise). 3. The "guard retaining clip" is a small plastic piece with squeeze springs. It sits over the screw at the back of the black bar behind the blade on the right. Once you remove the clip, then you pull the bar over the screw head to release the blade guard.

This video is to show the saw and some of the features. I so far have used it to build a stand for my Logitech G27 steering wheel. |
