This review is from: Evolution and Genetics for Psychology (Paperback)
Daniel Nettle is a great tutor in evolutionary psychology. His book "Personality" is a fantastic introduction to understanding behavior and traits as significantly genetic. "Happiness" is an equally interesting read about the levels of happiness, form short-term, objectively identifiable pleasure to long-term satisfaction.
The title words "for Psychology" are kind of misleading, as Nettle admits in the introduction. This is book about Darwin's theory interacting with Mendelian genetics. Those studying psychology should read this, and so should those studying anthropology and philosophy and mathematics. I consider this MUST KNOW information for all humans. Unfortunately most Americans do not believe in evolution, but as science becomes more and more glaringly obvious that will change. Fair warning, this is a hard read if you're new to genetics. I empty tubes of highlighter on the pages, but I've come away with a better understanding of the world. This will make you realize that we differ from animals quantitatively, not qualitatively. It will make you feel a little weird about having fellow animals in "exhibits" at local zoos. Hopefully, more than anything, it will make you a better person as it has me. |
