Kitty is a true jazz Goddess!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Evolution (Audio CD)
The more I read about who is the next "it girl" in jazz vocals, the more I feel the need to speak up. After first reading about Kitty in the Chicago Tribune in 1989 and hearing her here on the radio, I have been following her career and recordings for over 10 years. I have test driven a lot of new "jazz" vocalists coming down the pike. Pretenders move aside. They all pale next to Kitty. K.M. has a 100% present, take no prisoners attitude. Her dualities are what fascinate me so: hip yet sweet, ironic yet sincere, hard burnin' yet poignant...on and on in this vein. Great, original song selection too. I won't compare her point for point with other singers, but I hear traces of Betty, Sarah, Flora and Ella. She has her own unique sound, very saxophonic. This particular CD (and I love all 3 of her CDs) stands out to me because of her chemistry with tenor sax legend Joe Henderson. She is musician enough to keep right up with Joe and he is actually taking lots of musical cues from her. This is the best voice/ horn pairing since Billie and Lester. And no folks, it is not because I have a weakness for redheads (even tho' I admit I do!) All I can say is treat yourself to the real thing. This girl has everything one looks for in a jazz singer and some things that never even occured to me until I heard her. Wish I could give it 1,000 stars. Get it. You won't be sorry if you like real jazz singing, but with a new spin.

WOW!,

I finally got a copy of this recently, and it hasn't left my CD player since! What a rollercoaster of emotions and inspired singing. Kitty Margolis is backed up by an incredible band here, including the amazing Joe Henderson, but it's her voice that stands out--full of feeling, joy, and passion for life. From Anthropology to I'm old fashioned to Please send me someone to love to Where do you start, Kitty goes from bebop to blues to ballads with the same incredible ease and mastery. But it's not her considerable vocal talent that stands out to me most, it's what she makes me feel, how she takes risks both musically and emotionally. I can't stop listening to it--someone help me!

Outstanding vocal album,

The scat solo on Anthropology is worth the price of admission, and the rest of the album is terrific too. Margolis and Joe Henderson sound great together, particularly on I'm Old Fashioned, Footprints, and Gone With the Wind. Finally a singer who takes real chances and can sing straight-ahead jazz too!

Oh, yes . . .,

Throughout, Kitty Margolis makes the ears feel good and keeps the imagination tuned and surprised, but best of all are the smiles she brings in songs like I'm Old Fashioned and Ancient Footprint and the juice in her blues. This CD takes me away, somewhere wonderfully away.

Tired of jazz vocalists who sing pleasant background music and never take any risks? Listen to this and you'll realize who's really pushing the tradition forward! I couldn't believe this album when I first got it! Kitty Margolis is a phenomenal singer who's not afraid to take the music to a new level with soul, passion, and a remarkable mastery of jazz...Yes, the scat solo on Anthropology is amazing, but then so are the ballads...if you haven't heard this, you've missed out some of the most beautiful and compelling music made today!

This was the first album I purchased and was immediatley hooked. Yes, Anthropology is worth the price alone but all the tunes have their edge and sparkle. It would be nice if she recorded more often!
