5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Talent!
Why Oleta Adams isn't the biggest name in the business is a complete mystery to me, because she is an absolute force of nature. The voice never ceases to amaze me: deep, rich, smoky, powerful, with a soaring quality and an ability to express the deepest emotions. 2.0 out of 5 stars A disappointing followup from a rare vocalist.
All I can say that despite the inspirational nature of these songs they are pretty musically mundane. These recordings are not worthy of such a gifted artist.

A real shame.

Why Oleta Adams isn't the biggest name in the business is a complete mystery to me, because she is an absolute force of nature. The voice never ceases to amaze me: deep, rich, smoky, powerful, with a soaring quality and an ability to express the deepest emotions. I can't say that I like every song on this album equally, but most of them are terrific. I realised today as I was driving on an out-of-state road trip that this album and Oleta's first album "Circle Of One" are always the first things I pack in my travel bag, and the first CDs that go into the CD player in the rental car, or on the beach, and it has been that way since the albums first came out.

If you haven't heard Oleta Adams, don't wait another day. Life is way too short!

5.0 out of 5 stars JUST HAVE TO HEAR HER VOICE, August 11, 2003
This review is from: Evolution (Audio CD)
This CD has to be the most consistent of any I have heard in years. From the very first song, MY HEART WON'T LIE, you are compelled and amazed. Special moments are endless, but particularly stellar are her covers of JUST DON'T WANT TO BE LONELY and NEW YORK STATE OF MIND. Here, she displays the height and depth of her incredible range; thick like a milkshake, yet smooth as a Chardonay. The show stopper has GOT to be I JUST HAD TO HEAR YOUR VOICE. Testimony to the truest disposition of love gone but not quite forgotten. Dancers wil be drawn to EASIER TO SAY GOODBYE and the more mellow, LOVER'S HOLIDAY. EVOLUTION is a playful melody that begs us to reconsider everything. Just before she it brings home, she toasts true romance once again with THE DAY I STOP LOVING YOU. Lastly, Oleta inspires you with an uplifting gospel feel on WINDOW OF HOPE. This CD should leave you transfixed. Like a fine culinary experience, it gets better with each bite. BON APETITE!

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh! Oleta!! What a Soul Diva!!!, May 29, 2005
This review is from: Evolution (Audio CD)
Oleta Adams has one of those voices that reaches down into the depths of your being. She is uniquely talented in her song writing as well. Six songs on this cd are all hers! And if that isn't enough, she also masters the keyboards and piano on all but one of these numbers.

The opening song, "My Heart Won't Lie" is a gorgeous rich ballad that Oleta wrote and sings. Her vocal on "Hold Me For A While" is so gorgeous it will send shivers throughout. Oleta pulls out all of the stops on James Taylor's "Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight". This song also features David Sanborn on the alto sax. "When Love Comes To The Rescue" is one of Oleta's best original compositions. There is a wonderful flugelhorn solo by Chuck Findley which is not to be missed! Oleta's original "Easier To Say Goodbye" is a hot cooking revival number that is over 6 1/2 minutes long! This number also features an outstanding guitar solo from Michael Landau (who appears on all songs but one on this cd). And as a bonus, there is a rhythm solo from bassist Freddie Washington and drummer Richie Stevens. "New York State of Mind" oozes with Oleta's sensual singing. And her keyboards smolder! The addition of Chuck Findley on trumpet and Tom Scott on tenor sax just bring the temperature up even further!!

Oleta Adams' brilliant talent shines throughout this cd. Originally recorded in '93, these songs are timeless! Very much a treasure for those who appreciate the finer music in life.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best singer of soul since Shirley Bassey, September 28, 2001
This review is from: Evolution (Audio CD)
I am a spanish fan to Oleta since 1990 in the spiritual chorus to Tears For Fears's "woman in chains".More later the album "Circle of one" inspired me a lot of feelings - The version of Brenda Russells's "get here" made me cry-.But this album are incredible, all songs are specials, specially "my heart won't lie","when love comes to the rescue"...The production are PERFECT" - Thanks Stewart Levine and all the faboulous musicians -.One doubt:Oleta, Can you play in concert here at Madrid (Spain).-"Creatchy" David Garfield did it with Boz Scaggs. My admiration for you are greatest.
P.D: Sorry for my "bad english"

4.0 out of 5 stars you just have to hear her voice., February 9, 1999
This review is from: Evolution (Audio CD)
the vocal peer of anita baker and dianne reeves, oleta adams arose from a sea of would-be divas fully formed, like venus rising from the ocean. having cut her musical teeth performing in piano bars (where she was discovered by a touring tears for fears), adams' polished talent and decided elegance make it difficult to remember a time without her. on her sophomore release, _evolution_, adams follows closely the recipe that brought her debut acclaim...a combination of covers and original pieces, both molded by statiny vocals and jazz-tinged instrumentation to be distincly her own. a slight variation this time around has adams tightening her musical focus to more straight-forward r&b/jazz/quiet storm compositions and fewer worldbeat flavoured numbers. the centerpiece of the album, "i just had to hear your voice", is easily in competition with "get here" for her most perfect song. while _circle of one_ and _moving on_ are more memborable albums, anybody who simply can't get enough of her voice will want this album in their collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars The voice of an Angel, July 19, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Evolution (Audio CD)
The first time I heard this album, I couldn't believe my ears. Her vocal range and sultry voice are like nothing I've heard before. "Hold me for a while" is by far one of the loveliest ballads I've ever heard. I had the pleasure of seeing her in concert, and that is a treat to behold.

The voices of 10,000 angels could not express my gratitude to God for such a heaven-sent gift. I had the opportunity to see Ms. Adams in concert, in Houston and it is one that I will never forget. From beginning to end, I was captivated by her voice. I can't wait for that chance again. I have all of her music and I anxiously await the next CD. You are a blessing, thank you.
