Hollies Look Through Any Window 1963-1975 Trailer

Biography

From 1963 through to the mid-70’s, the Hollies had more hits than the Beatles. In that period alone, they had 17 Top ten hits, while “He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother” gave them a second No 1 hit when re-released in 1988. “I’m Alive” had been their first chart topper back in 1965. At the heart of the band since 1963 are two original members, drummer Bobby Elliott and guitarist and singer Tony… Read more in Amazon's Hollies Store

This review is from: Evolution (Audio CD)
Obviously influenced by The Beatles, Evolution is the second Hollies album to exclusively have self-written material. As was common in the uk in those days, the lp does not contain what was then the current hit single, which the us version did include (Carrie Anne). Even without this hit, the album holds up well. The highlight of the album, to me, is Tony Hick's guitar work on "Then The Heartaches Begin," "Have You Ever Loved Somebody," and on "You Need Love." Natually, the Clarke/Nash harmony vocals are in fine form, although Graham does a weird voice on "Lullaby To Tim," which I think would have sounded much better as a simple, straight ahead vocal without the studio effect. "Leave Me," "The Games We Play" and "Have You Ever Loved Somebody" are good rock songs, and "Stop Right There" and "Ye Olde Toffee Shoppe" are pleasant softer songs.

The album is solid, as I said, but this BGO release could be better. Unfortunately, the mono mix was used in this release, as in all of the BGO releases of early Hollies lp's. The sound itself does not sound as sharp as I've heard these songs on different compilation cd's. Of course, I hope for a re-issue in proper stereo, with bonus tracks (no bonus tracks are included, either). In the meantime, this is well worth your money, if only to hear Graham Nash sing titles that you've never heard !
