Techno With Soul!,
By
This review is from: Evolver (Audio CD)
After scoring with "Tainted Love", ex-Soft Cell guy David Ball went on to form Grid. This album is their finest moment, its eletronic soul tempered with unforgettable melodies, superb improvisation and the stuff that makes electronic music so mind-tripping. Sure, you can dance to it. But you can also hear it over and over and hear nuance and shade, degrees and shifts. And, on "Swamp Thing", a cool banjo riff gets merged with unstoppable synth-beats to create something fresh. Grid are far better than 9/10ths of other so-called "techno" acts out there. Evolver follows in the grand tradition of Tangerine Dream, Jean-Michel Jarre, Klaus Schulze. Check out "Rise" and "Shapes Of Sleep" to see what I mean. Oh, yeah, one more thing: King Crimson guitarist Robert Fripp turns up here and there. A great release!

Evolver pumps the adrenaline...,

Released in 1994 from the U.K. label BMG Records, Evolver cuts the groove into the head with the clean sound of highstylin' rave/techno. Never imitates nor pretends; the bag holds a crowd of soul satisfying work to do anything with- driving, dancing or doin' the dishes! Worth every cent; not on track is lame. I recommend Evolver to those who like to drive their car too fast.

EVOLVER is one of the better techno albums around. Period. Their use of synths, drum machines, unique samples, and clever programming takes you on a whirlwhind journey of sound. Add to that, some great melodies and strong songwriting chops, and you have yourself an album that's worthy of many listens. The track "THROB" featuring Robert Fripp is classic and worth buying the CD for.

I am listening to this album since the last 15 years or so... and it still amazes me everytime i play it.. Especially the last song, 'golden dawn' , ive never heard a baritone voice mixed with techno sounds so beautifully. And no matter how many times you hear this one.. it will never age..

Grid - Evolver,
This review is from: Evolver (Audio CD)
A classic of its time, The Grid's third album, _Evolver_, is probably their best-known work, spawning a number of hit singles. There's still plenty to enjoy about it, years on, from the zippy "Wake Up" to the infamous banjo on "Swamp Thing" (also known as 'the banjo heard around the world'). The western riff on "Texas Cowboys" is just as good, if not as immediately catchy, just as the guitar on "Throb" gives it rock music's energy, but with a definite techno mindset. "Rise" and "Higher Peaks" seems a bit more typical, but "Shapes of Sleep" gets back to proper stomp tempo with some deep male chanting (for more chanting, go to "Golden Dawn"). You know what? It's still great after all these years.

pure techno - better than most,
By RobBase (Texas) - See all my reviews

This album sometimes gets a bad rap because the the most popular singles (Texas Cowboys, Swamp Thing) while well executed dancefloor stompers, suffer from all the "rave" trappings of its day including electronic "hand claps" and "siren" sounds. Yet, as a whole, the album is so technologically slick and melodically precise that you can't help but be drawn to repeated listenings. Those with patience will be rewarded by Robert Fripp's soaring guitars (Higher Peaks, Throb), and the operatic vocal stylings from Martyn Sharp (Golden Dawn). This album is a sure bet for any electronic dance fan.

Most "Musical" techno ever.,

Just a fantastic work. Lush, full, and very "musical". Truly a rarity...Grab one of these if you can. The Grid made very little music, and all of it great; this being their best.

Quite good ambient/techno,

Grid is one of the better b-rated artists of this genre, but their music still has to go one step further to reach the likes of Fluke or Tangerine Dream. Keep your eye on Grid in the future.

Aún peor,

This review is from: Evolver (Audio CD)
