5.0 out of 5 stars Best manual opener there is but price outrageous.
I have bought many manual jar openers. This is the only one that really works. No slipping, adjusting, straining, etc.
So good I bought 3 for family members.
But $10 ish??? You can get them at Walmart in the $3+ range. But very hard to find now - sorry I didnt buy more!
Going to buy a handful next time I see them at that price.
Note I said manual -...

1.0 out of 5 stars trash
I put this in my wife's stocking this year and decided to demonstrate proudly on a jar of sun dried tomatoes from CostCo. Anyone who knows this jar, knows it would be a great test for any jar opener .. it's large, about 4-4.5 inches diameter so it's hard to get your hand around and it's vacuum sealed tight. I didn't have a chance to test out the strength of the opener...

Note I said manual - the electric Black & Decker lids off is better for very stubborn medium to largish factory sealed jars like salsa. This is a handy gizmo for quick opening of small things like baby food jars and things that just got too tight in the frig etc. This is much faster to use than the electric so I enjoy having both avail in my kitchen.

I didn't have a chance to test out the strength of the opener because as I was opening the tool wide enough to fit the cap, it snapped in two. I didn't even want to deal with returning it .. it went straight to the trash.

For grammy (no offense grams) opening ketchup bottles or baby food jars, I imagine this would work great. But for the guys and gals who don't have arthritis and are looking to open the most challenging jars, this is worthless.

Wish I had come up with this idea, but I'm merely fumbling onto the shoulders of those much more ingenious than I am.

I've used it with these lenses and it's absolutely awesome:
17-55/2.8 IS EF-S
70-200/4L IS
135/2.0 L

My only fear ordering it was the squeeze pressure. Didn't want it to be too much to risk damaging the lens, nor too wimpy and have it fall off. I find the second smallest aperture :) on the jar opener to be just the size and tension Goldy Locks would use, were she inclined to do such a thing.

Oh, I included a customer photo up there so you can see what it looks like.

2.0 out of 5 stars plastic not too durable, December 19, 2010

At first I thought this was going to be the best purchase I had ever made. We used it successfully for 3 weeks and it worked very well. Then my wife was struggling with a cheese-whiz jar (I know, what were you doing opening that in the first place?) and spread it open to fit the large jar mouth and the plastic support, right at the apex snapped in two. Now it is totally useless. The concept is great and I guess if they would use a stronger or more flexible support plastic it would be a winner. My search goes on.

I have had joint replacement surgery on both thumbs due to arthritis, so opening jars is difficult. I bought one of these for our motor home. I liked this opener so well I'm buying another for myself and three more for friends and family. I also have an electric Black & Decker opener, but this one works so well I actually use it more often.

Bought this device for an elderly relative. We tried to open a medium-sized jar of jam and the thing snapped into two parts as we tried to fit it around the lid. Felt super cheap to the touch. The device looked as if it was returned previously since it was scratched and dirty. Do not buy.

I wish I had more closely paid attention to the negative reviews. The concept looked well designed. But it broke on first use. LIke many other commenters, its not worth it.
