When I first used it I thought it wasn't picking up very much as it barely touched the wood chips from my wood carving. Then I opened it to empty and saw the TON of pet hair inside that I couldn't see in the carpet! On the second try it started picking up the wood chips with ease. Does it replace a vacuum sweeper? No, but its great for quick clean up between vacuuming...especially when someone calls to say they were just in the neighborhood...

Ewbank Vs dog hair,

This device works better than a vacuum cleaner in the removal of dog hair from carpets! It is scary to see how much hair can be embedded in a rug by a continually shedding dog!
It is worthy of praise, and works quietly!

The carpet sweeper is quiet as can be, no electricity needed so it does not scare children or pets. Cleans small messes quite well. Easy to clean out as well.

This is a very good sweeper. I bought the Bissell Natural Sweep Dual Brush Sweeper first and returned it because the handle kept falling off and it was noisy. The Ewbank sweeper has a secure handle, is quiet, and does a better job. It doesn't replace my electric vacuum but it does cut down the number of times I need to use the vacuum cleaner. I used to have to vacuum daily but now I use the sweeper every day and the electric vacuum once a week. I prefer it over the vacuum because it's lightweight and quiet so I can use it while others in my home are asleep.
The are 2 cons: 1. It doesn't work on my linoleum floors (so I don't know if it will work on wood floors), but it does a good job on my carpets. 2. It only sweeps when you push it forward so you do have to go over one area at least 2 times. Ewbank does make a slightly more expensive sweeper with a dual brush that works in both directions. Neither of these cons is a big deal for me. Overall, this is a handy tool to have. It will cut down the number of times you need to pull out your heavy electric vacuum and it's quiet so you can use it anytime without disturbing your sleeping loved ones. UPDATE 9/28/10: This worked great on my old low pile carpet but not so great on the new plush carpet we just installed. Bottom line: the sweeper works well on Berber/low pile carpet only. For this reason, I am changing my initial 5 star rating to 3 stars.

Doesn't work on bare floors at all,

I purchased one of this type of sweepers for each floor of my house. The other sweeper is a Bissell (purchased at a local big box store). The Bissell has several different brushes on the bottom and you can push and pull it across the floor. The Ewbank cost almost double the Bissell, has one brush, and you can't pull it back easily at all. It does pick up cat hair from my low wool area rugs. You have to push it forward and then practically pick it up to do another spot. The Bissell does about the same, but is far easier to push and pull. Neither one of them pick up anything from my wood floors at all. They push any dirt or crumbs ahead of them. You'd be far better off with a broom and dust-pan on bare floors. But, if you want to pick up crumbs or cat hair from carpets, this sweeper works pretty well (except for the issue with the rear wheels). Overall, I was really disappointed with this purchase. This item appears more cheaply made than the Bissell, which was half the cost. I assumed by the price that it would be of a heavier-duty quality.
The units both empty the same way (easy to do, but still messy), and I'd recommend doing it outside unless you want the dust and hair to go flying.

We bought this sweeper to sweep under a parakeet's cage because he flips his seeds out. This sweeper does not pick up seed and feathers in carpeting so we returned it.

Pretty good at getting cat hair, crumbs so-so. Have used it only on carpet, haven't tried it on bare floor. Takes lots of finger strength to empty. You must grasp housing and squeeze hard to keep dustpan open while sweeping inside of pan with other hand--the contents seem to be held in the pan by static electricity and don't " just fall out". I'm in good shape so no big deal, but I don't know if a small woman could empty it. Certainly not for anyone with arthritis. Someone said it was "cheap Chinese junk", but it is made in the United Kingdom and imo looks good and seems nicely made for the money. If I had it to do over I probably would have gone for one of their upscale models. PS- Recently found that using a vacuum cleaner to empty the dustpan works very well. :)

I got my sweeper yesterday...used it today for the first time. It does exactly what it's suppose to do. It picked up crumbs, little pieces of popcorn, dog hair and stuff I didn't know was there. It is not suppose to replace a vacuum...but to be used between vacuum's to "tidy up" . If that's what your looking for ...this is the sweeper for you.

Like another reviewer, I wasnt sure this sweeper was doing it's job until I opened it up and saw all of the hair it picked up. It's housing is very lightweight and I wasnt sure about it's sweeping ability but it works just fine. The handles don't come apart like some other brand's either. Recommended!

I checked all the items similar to this and noticed most of them said they had issues with the handles. This one had no problems. It does seem a little cheap although I don't know what the others feel like. I used to work at a restaurant and was used to a very sturdy one. Regardless this did the job well. It picked up dog hair which is the main reason I purchased. It doesn't replace a vacuum cleaner but is nice for in-between.
