Book Description

April 1, 2007
Ever since Shonda stole Malik from his fiancée—at the altar, no less—she’s believed that marrying him would be her ticket to happiness. But when he finally steps up and makes it happen, Shonda is in for a rude awakening. From the day he moves his ex-convict brother into their basement, to the day he loses his job, things go downhill. To top it off, Shonda suspects he’s playing around. But when Shonda starts breaking the rules at her job as a county prison corrections officer, things go from bad to worse… Meanwhile, Malik’s ex-fiancée, Kim, has had a year to get over the nightmare that was supposed to be her wedding day. On the verge of a breakdown, she gets professional help and manages to pull it together—despite the news that Malik actually married the bitch who spoiled her nuptials. Just as she opens up to the idea of a new life and a new love, Kim meets a new man…who happens to be white. Is he the one she’s been looking for? Kim will have to look past her own issues about race to find out. After two years with her boyfriend Rodney, Nadine Clark is feeling restless. The twenty-five-year-old wants to see what else—meaning who else—is out there. But Nadine soon discovers the single life isn’t what she’d imagined. Rodney, on the other hand, is having the time of his life with a new girlfriend. Dejected, Nadine takes up with Malik—a man she believes is single, because that’s what he told her. But when his wife, Shonda, confronts her at work, everything hits the fan…and soon everyone involved is coming face-to-face with the shocking truths—and some crazy consequences—that come with getting what they wished for…

From Booklist

Malik is a good-looking man with a reputation for being unfaithful to the women in his life. He and Kimberly are engaged, yet he is also seriously involved with Shonda, who crashes their wedding. Kimberly goes into a deep depression until she meets Andrew. Malik and Shonda get married, and she starts working as a prison guard. To replace the finances that Malik no longer contributes, Shonda begins earning extra money by breaking prison rules. She also gets romantically involved with an inmate who claims his innocence but is found guilty of all charges. Malik finds a new job preparing taxes and meets Nadine, a single schoolteacher. They date until Shonda confronts Nadine in her classroom. Nadine tells Malik about Shonda's visit and questions his status. He admits being married, and Nadine breaks off the relationship. She then realizes how much she misses her old boyfriend, Erick, who takes her back. All the former partners in this absorbing read are eventually held accountable for their bad choices. Lillian Lewis

1.0 out of 5 stars Hated it, August 3, 2006

I did not enjoy this book at all. It was felt like I was reading someone's diary -- the storyline was very choppy and the chapters ended abruptly. I would not recommend this book. If you must buy it, get it at the library.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ex-Girl to the Next Girl by Daaimah S Poole: An PeoplewholoveGoodBooks Review, May 2, 2006
Shonda, Malik, and Kim are back! The characters you got to know and love in "Got a Man" are back in the sequel "Ex-Girl to the Next Girl". Shonda and Malik are now living together after the day Shonda interrupted Malik's wedding to Kim. Shonda believes that Malik is the one and that once they marry, life will be perfect. For a while, things are perfect until Malik's ex-con brother moves in and he then loses his job. Things begin to quickly spiral out of control and soon Malik is back to his old tricks. Meanwhile Shonda gets a job working at the prison and soon finds herself in over her head as she gets involved with the wrong people but Shonda is in for the shock of her life as karma comes back full circle. Kim, heartbroken, and on the verge of a nervous breakdown must put her life back together and raise her children. Soon, she meets a new man and things seem to be going well except she can't get over the fact that he's white. Kim has also confronted her past and located her first son's father-the man who raped her and left her pregnant. Will Kim finally be able to move on and find happiness?

Ex-Girl to the Next Girl is a satisfying sequel that is a fast-paced read that grabs the reader's attention. The characters are ones that you can relate to, but the ending leaves unanswered questions, could there be a part 3? Either way, this is one sequel that delivers! I give this book 4 stars. 3.0 out of 5 stars You Reap What You Sow, July 26, 2006

Shonda, Malik and Kim from Got A Man by Daaimah S. Poole, are back with EX-GIRL TO THE NEXT GIRL. Shonda ruined Malik and Kim's wedding in Got A Man, EX-GIRL TO THE NEXT GIRL opens with Malik and Shonda living together and Kim in a state of depression. Trying to balance family life with Malik, Shonda is in for a rude awakening when she searches and lands a new job, Malik loses his job and his ex-convict brother moves into their home. Kim, on the other hand, is going about her daily life with no real desires. From home to work and back again, Kim has forced herself into a slump. Her family begs her to seek help for her depression. When a romantic interest enters her world, what will Kim do, go for it or slip further into the unknown? Malik and Shonda marry and his life begins to spiral out of control. He takes a job as a tax preparer and this is where he meets Nadine, a schoolteacher. Nadine, bored with her current beau, dumps him and throws herself into the dating scene.

EX-GIRL TO THE NEXT GIRL is a showing of people involved in infidelity and the consequences that can occur. Each character tells their story as they see it. We witness their vulnerabilities, their musings and their hopes and dreams. The downside is the story lacks creativity and is repetitive. Each chapter is more of the same "I got your man", "I need a man" or "I'll swear off men." There is no real storyline, just a continuation of the drama filled lives of twenty-something year old quasi adults. However, Kim's story bares some merit with the addition of her family and their involvement and assistance in her life and the lives of her children. The author does a good job with staying on point with her characterizations; each is true to their being and never once strayed out of character.
