I did not enjoy this book at all. It was felt like I was reading someone's diary -- the storyline was very choppy and the chapters ended abruptly. I would not recommend this book. If you must buy it, get it at the library.

Shonda, Malik, and Kim are back! The characters you got to know and love in "Got a Man" are back in the sequel "Ex-Girl to the Next Girl". Shonda and Malik are now living together after the day Shonda interrupted Malik's wedding to Kim. Shonda believes that Malik is the one and that once they marry, life will be perfect. For a while, things are perfect until Malik's ex-con brother moves in and he then loses his job. Things begin to quickly spiral out of control and soon Malik is back to his old tricks. Meanwhile Shonda gets a job working at the prison and soon finds herself in over her head as she gets involved with the wrong people but Shonda is in for the shock of her life as karma comes back full circle. Kim, heartbroken, and on the verge of a nervous breakdown must put her life back together and raise her children. Soon, she meets a new man and things seem to be going well except she can't get over the fact that he's white. Kim has also confronted her past and located her first son's father-the man who raped her and left her pregnant. Will Kim finally be able to move on and find happiness?

Ex-Girl to the Next Girl is a satisfying sequel that is a fast-paced read that grabs the reader's attention. The characters are ones that you can relate to, but the ending leaves unanswered questions, could there be a part 3? Either way, this is one sequel that delivers! I give this book 4 stars. 3.0 out of 5 stars You Reap What You Sow, July 26, 2006

The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers (RAWSISTAZ.com and BlackBookReviews.net) - See all my reviews
Shonda, Malik and Kim from Got A Man by Daaimah S. Poole, are back with EX-GIRL TO THE NEXT GIRL. Shonda ruined Malik and Kim's wedding in Got A Man, EX-GIRL TO THE NEXT GIRL opens with Malik and Shonda living together and Kim in a state of depression. Trying to balance family life with Malik, Shonda is in for a rude awakening when she searches and lands a new job, Malik loses his job and his ex-convict brother moves into their home. Kim, on the other hand, is going about her daily life with no real desires. From home to work and back again, Kim has forced herself into a slump. Her family begs her to seek help for her depression. When a romantic interest enters her world, what will Kim do, go for it or slip further into the unknown? Malik and Shonda marry and his life begins to spiral out of control. He takes a job as a tax preparer and this is where he meets Nadine, a schoolteacher. Nadine, bored with her current beau, dumps him and throws herself into the dating scene.

EX-GIRL TO THE NEXT GIRL is a showing of people involved in infidelity and the consequences that can occur. Each character tells their story as they see it. We witness their vulnerabilities, their musings and their hopes and dreams. The downside is the story lacks creativity and is repetitive. Each chapter is more of the same "I got your man", "I need a man" or "I'll swear off men." There is no real storyline, just a continuation of the drama filled lives of twenty-something year old quasi adults. However, Kim's story bares some merit with the addition of her family and their involvement and assistance in her life and the lives of her children. The author does a good job with staying on point with her characterizations; each is true to their being and never once strayed out of character.

4.0 out of 5 stars What an Appropriate Title, June 2, 2006

"Ex-girl to the Next Girl" is a well written, entertaining, swift read. Nadine, Kim, Shonda, Malik and Toya were a trip. Drama and chaos seem to follow them wherever they go. They could all use 45 minutes spent on a psychiatrist's couch. LOL

Daaimah has positively developed as a writer. I remember reading "Yo-Yo Love" and thinking "I could write a book too". I'm still working on it. LOL

Way to go Daaimah!

This review is from: Ex-Girl to the Next Girl (Paperback)
Daaimah S. Poole's "Ex-Girl to the Next Girl" is an acurate depiction of the old saying "What goes around comes around." The novel centers around Malik Moore and his encounters with three women-Shonda, Kim, and Nadine. Malik left Shonda @ the altar while she was pregnant with his son to be with Shonda. Shonda thinks her life with Malik could never be anything less than perfect; however, she is in for a rude awakening. Nadine decides to leave her current man to weigh her relationship options but it isn't long before she discovers that the grass is not always greener on the other side. After suffering from the ultimate betrayal, Kim feels there is not anyone out there for her and ends up finding love and happiness when she leasts expects it. Malik thinks he is the player extradanaire. He is fine and he knows it. In the end he and Shonda get what they deserve when KARMA pays them both a visit. The moral of this novel is if a man cheats on his woman to be with you, please believe he will cheat on you with another woman!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars All Drama, No Action, November 29, 2009

This book was pretty good despite the typos, grammatical errors, and repetitiveness. It was a quick interesting read but it wasn't jaw dropping or action packed like I hoped. Kim, Shonda, and Nadine, are the main characters and they all have one thing in common, Malik Moore. In the previous novel Got A Man, Malik left Kim standing at the altar for his side piece Shonda, in this book he gets wrangled into marrying her next. That old saying, "if a man will cheat WITH you he will cheat ON you" rings true, with a woman named Nadine shortly thereafter. Nadine has been with her boyfriend Erick for two years and he is ready to settle down, commit fully, and start the beginning of the rest of their lives together. Nadine on the other hand isn't 100% sure if Erick is the one for her and wants to cut him loose so she can play the field and see what else is out there. Selfishly and against his wishes and pleas she does, and to her dismay she gets played and Erick turns out to be what she wanted all along. . . too bad he doesn't want her back when she goes begging. That is when she falls into the sexy arms of married, cheating, Malik Moore. Kim still hurt, broken, and depressed over being left at the altar for another woman by her ex-fiancee' Malik is slowly going crazy. She refuses to let him see his infant son and even changed his named from Malik Moore Jr to Kayden. Not only is she experiencing mental side effects of her depression and stress, but she also starts getting sick physically and commences to act out of character by forgetting to pick up her boys, or waking them up and driving them to school on a Saturday. Her family requests that she seeks the help of a psychiatrist many times and finally she gives in. Before long Kim meets a wonderful man who is everything she wants in a partner and more. He tries persistently to sweep her off her feet but she resists because there is one problem, he is white. . . wait, or is that really a problem after all? Buckle up for a bumpy ride as we follow these characters and their colorful families as their lives intertwine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really Good Read, October 3, 2007
This review is from: Ex-Girl to the Next Girl (Paperback)
This book was pretty good, at first I didn't want to buy it but im glad that I did. Shonda was a trip, I actually liked her. She was dead wrong for busting up Kim's wedding, but honestly she saved Kim from a no good man. You get back what you give is a true statement for this book. MALIK was to triflin he was the epitame of a hoe. Poor Shonda what goes around comes around. Now Kim I think in the end she got what was really best for her and that was a good man. And Nadine she was to silly she know she should have never left that good man in the first place, she got what she deserved too. But in the end things worked out the way it should have for everybody.
