Fairly decent.,

This was not necessarily a typical purchase for me, as I usually prefer other styles. Upon hearing the first few songs, these adjectives sprung to mind "melodic, slacker, glam". That's how I would describe it. The first 5 songs are very good and have nice choruses; unfortunately the second half winds it down, and is almost formulaic singer/songwriter stuff. If they would have continued in the same vein as they started, it would have been an excellent release. So, 4 stars for the first half; 2 for the second=3.

No, I don't know the band...,

Nor am I a label person. I just really like this album. To be honest I'm a little put off that the last reviewer found it out of the realm of possibility that people legitimately think this band is good just because she/he didn't think they were anything special. People are way more intense about liking much more mediocre stuff. Just had to get that off my chest. Sure, there is a lot of pop/rock out there and most of it isn't very good but a lot of it ends up on the radio anyway, don't know how that happens. Basically these are just really well structured pop songs. The singer has a nice catch in his voice, and the lyrics are thoughtful. No real dark or serious stuff but they fit the tone of the music. The production may be a little slick depending on what you're into, but the band is undoubtedly genuine. I can understand the Maroon 5 comparisons these guys get, but I think they're better. Less pseudo-funk posturing. Overall I think it's a big accomplishment to make an album that stands out in such a bloated genre. Most of all, I give this a high rating because I find myself putting it on all the time and I haven't gotten tired of it at all.

Finally, an album you can listen to from beginning to end!,

These do exist; you just don't find them very often.
"Ex-Girlfriends", the debut album from Low Millions is one of them and promises a little something for every mood. "Eleanor", the first single from the album, is one everyone can sing-along with. Upbeat, great lyrics, and great vocals from lead singer Adam Cohen. "100 Blouses", an ironic track about searching for a lost love in the "love" of others. A mellow track and hopefully, the bands next single. "Diary", a darker track with an edgy beat. Fave lyrics - "I read how you resent me, you even dreamed that I was dead. You said you thought that I'd look stunning with a bullet in my head." "Statue", another mellow track about lost love. Upbeat at times. A great song to drive to... don't ask ;). "Nikki Don't Stop", a sultry track that doesn't need a whole lot more description. "Hotter than a stolen Rolex, hotter than late-night phone sex"... need I go on? Those are just a few of my favorite tracks, but again, the entire album is set on repeat. The album title is fitting, seeing as how every track is essentially a love song, each with its own individual feel and sound. Add one more die-hard fan to the growing list. These guys are gonna be around for a while.

I can't say enough about how great this CD is. Every song on this album is good. My favorite tracks are Eleanor, Julia, and Diary. This album has it all, the lyrical content equals the musical content. Adam Cohen has crafted such dark and relateable lyrics. They are sexual, they are lamenting, they are sad, they are angry but most of all they Rock.

I don't know how this went under my radar...,

A friend who dj's for college radio in Florida actually played this for me and somehow I, living in NYC, had managed to let this band slip by me... I got the CD right away (it's only been out for a week or so), and I'm really crazy about it... The band's frontman and songwriter is Adam Cohen (Leonard Cohen's son), who I guess has had a pretty distinguished musical career in France and Quebec, but this was my first exposure to him... He's definately got the old man's lyrical knack--very autumnal and beautiful lyrics--but he's not into the whole deadpan talk-singing thing; the music runs a gamut from shimmering pop-folk to real rockers. It's a great band, super-tight, and I'm hoping to get a glimpse of a live show soon... At any rate, it's nice to hear lyrics that have some semblance of narrative sense, rather than opting for vagueness masquerading as poetry. Man, I really dig this band. Holla.

Great CD - Modest, Down to Earth Guys,

Having had the pleasure of discovering Adam Cohen's solo english effort, I waited for years for the follow up. Fortunately for all of us, Adam has teamed up with some great musicians to form Low Millions and release a really great CD. Noteably, I have to mention Michael Chaves, the guitar player of the band. This man is a genius with his instrument and for those who may not in the loop, he has spent much of his days over the past few years playing with/for John Mayer prior to the formation of Low Millions. Not often have musicians (most of the overly-marketed Top 40 phenoms still pushing past their five minutes of fame) really experienced what they sing about, but listen to the words behind each song on this CD carefully and enjoy the music behind it because you can sometimes feel where the emotion is coming from and how easy it is to empathize with many of the songs. This CD is definately a must have for any music lover's collection. Not only is the CD a great listen but the guys of Low Millions rock LIVE in concert. The guys in the band are so humble and modest and greatly appreciate the support by all the fans in the early stages of what I hope is a long and successful career for them as a band and as individuals. I had the opportunity to chat with them after their show in Vancouver & I would definately hope to see them perform many times in the future.

This record is a gem. Adam Cohen has an amazing way of making relationships gone wrong the foundation for great songs. Not that it hasn't been done before, but what's interesting is that there's no whining or brooding. It's more about how life can be enriched even when things don't always work out. Both musically and lyrically, this record is catchy and exciting. I originally thought it sounded like Shawn Mullins meets Coldplay, but a friend of mine pointed out references to U2 and now I can't listen without hearing it. The first 6 songs are fantastic, with 9 out of the 11 pretty much instant classics.

You know the deal: on any given CD, usually there's one or two tracks that stick with you, that you'd want to put on your iPod or mix tape. EX-GIRLFRIENDS has got eight of them. This disc has all the earmarks of a classic debut: incredibly catchy tunes; smart and at times, haunting, lyrics; and a thematic link that holds it all together. Adam Cohen, who seems to be the star of the show, also seems to be tapped as the breakout star of the band, perhaps deservedly so.
In any case, this is the most addictive CD I've listened to since Fountain of Wayne's WELCOME INTERSTATE MANAGERS. I recommend EX-GIRLFRIENDS highly.

I, too, do not know the band. I did spend $16 on a concert ticket last month and I was immediately hooked. The band was tight and the vocals supurb. The venue held less than 200 people and the band performed as if they were in front of 60,000 fans-- these guys are for real and are 100% heart. The CD does not exaggerate their talent-- they are not studio-created idols like many other artists.
During the intro of the band at the show, it was mentioned that the lead guitarist, Michael Chaves, had been on tour with John Mayer for the last several years. The lead singer Adam Cohen is son of Leonard Cohen, the famous poet/singer. What a winning combination. I hear a piano influence from old Bowie (1971-73) tracks and similar rhythm to the band The The. Although every track is about lost love, this CD is innovative and each song sounds very different from one another-- I've been listening to it three weeks straight on my hour commute to/from work and I have not tired of it. That must mean something.

Snaps for the Music, but did a 13 year old write the lyrics?,

After reading the reviews on this site, I was psyched to get this cd. I tore it open when i got it and immediately put it in my car and sped off with excitement. ONly to be quickly disappointed. The music is fabulous! But the lyrics are just random and sound like something written by a college freshman in creative writing class.
There are words that just stick out of the music making it rather disjointed. Particularly the usage of the word "sperm" in the song, "money thing". There are certain words in the english language that make you pause when you hear them in a song, like Live's use of the word "Placenta" in the song, "lightning crashes." Low Millions's "money thing" is similar, but after listening to the whole album, you wonder, could you have said the same thing a bit more eloquently? 100 Blouses is an interestingly visual song. But for me, the only song that is worth listening to is Hey Jane. Eleanor is decent but i'm rather disappointed i spent my money on this. Should have bought the new Beck instead. |
