Brian K Vaughn & Tony Harris Ex Machina is nothing short of amazing, and should you not even be into graphic novels its definitely something even critics won't ignore. BKV has no fear of dealing with an alternate post 9/11 world, and add to the fact backs up a lot of excellent political what ifs. If you loved the first deluxe edition of the series, or even if your a fan who bought the monthlies or even the softcover trades these editions are excellent...they don't unforunately have the extras an absolute edition would give you, but its worth it at the price your getting it at. My biggest problem was the time between the first deluxe edition, and this edition. I mean literally it was from June 2008 till December of 2009. The comics were already written, so they shouldn't have had such a gap in time. Amazon has Ex Machina Deluxe Vol. 3 already, and its not far from being released.

ex machina, one of my favorite series and nearly drawing to a close is collected in its second deluxe edition, and while the story and art are top notch, it falls short of the previus deluxe edition in one department, the cover. at this point, I expect that if i am going to drop thirty dollars on a hard cover that it will be faux leather bound with some shiny lettering like the previous one was. it is a small arguement and should not take away from your enjoyment, but noteworthy nevertheless.

Could have been better...,

My feeling are the same for the second volume...The sci-fi elements of the story and the artwork could have easily earned this series a rating of 4 stars but all of the liberal propoganda espoused by the main character (a supposed independent) pulled this down to a 2. I understand that it is human nature for some of the writer's beliefs/viewpoints to come out in the story but here it is delivered with a sledgehammer and it constantly pulls you out of the story as the writer uses the main character to "preach" his viewpoint on various controversial topics.
Also if you are sensitive to foul language, be warned - this has plenty. |
