Editorial Reviews

VITAL DUO is the new band created by the PAYSSAN twin brothers, who are MINIMUM VITAL's guitarist and keyboards player. They intend to work with the inspirational sources of their original band's music: baroque and ancient music, folk influences from various countries are magnified in order to create a totally original musical world led by acoustic instruments which are sometimes electrified, or supported by a few vocals. VITAL DUO's first album, called "Ex Tempore" (2001), was warmly welcomed by both fans of medieval music and fans of progressive rock. And that's precisely what Jean-Luc & Thierry PAYSSAN are good at ? mixing traditional with electricity, minstrels with songwriters, Guillaume De MACHAUT with YES. "Le Jardin Hors Du Temps" (2002) is VITAL DUO's first DVD, recorded in the beautiful frame of Mussonville's chapel, near Bordeaux. Surrounded by their bunch of traditional and modern instruments, the twins manage to delight the audience with their intimate, simple and refined melodies. Their music "speaks" to your soul, emphasizing a universal musical patrimony that has been marking people's mind through ages. The DVD includes seven previously unreleased songs, out of nine. As an exclusive bonus, the listener is invited to (re-)discover "Les Mondes De..." ("The Worlds Of..."), MINIMUM VITAL's famous 1994 video, that had been out of print for several years, now remastered. Let the timeless music take you far away !

Format: Audio CD
You may have heard other bands with medieval influences, but this is nothing like Gryphon or Amazing Blondel. The instrumentation is is a mix of ancient and modern, but the spirit is placed firmly in the era of Guillaume de Machaut.
This album is infused with Gallic vitality, giving life and energy to venerable melodies. Guillaume de Machaut's music is appropriated freely, but it sits comfortably alongside the music written by the Payssan brothers for this album, such is their understanding of the medieval spirit.
My only criticism is that at over an hour the album is a trifle long. Especially given that there is only a little dynamic variation throughout the album.
This is a fine album and highly recommended to anyone who has enjoyed the work of Minimum Vital in the past, as well as those who like their music bright, upbeat, energetic and complex.
