4.0 out of 5 stars Crack developed within two weeks. August 13, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase
I was very happy with the compost pail when I first got it. It was large, just right for the countertop. It was easy to clean. The handle could be used to hold the lid up during meal prep when you sometimes don't have two hands to open the lid. After about two weeks, a crack developed in the bottom along one of the diagonal ridges that are on the bottom of the pail. The pail was not abused in any way. It seemed a bit premature to have the pail crack so soon. A crack on the bottom is the worst place because then it leaks all over the counter. I will attempt to write to the manufacturer and ask for a replacement. I will report back on the results.
FOLLOW-UP: I called Amazon and they were willing to send out a replacement. It seemed silly to have to return the old one but I did as the customer representative asked. I changed my rating from 3 to 4 stars because I was happy with Amazon's service.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love it! April 27, 2010

I'm very happy with this compost pail. It's big enough that I don't need to empty it more than once a week (we're a family of 4, mostly vegetarians). It seems very sturdy. The filter is working great, I've never smelled anything. I haven't seen a single fruit fly either.

5.0 out of 5 stars Goodbye fruit flies! August 4, 2011
By Kim

I ordered two of these and they are everything I dreamed they would be: large capacity, latching (yet easy to open) lid with carbon filter, and simple to use. Gone are the days of having bowls of scraps sitting around the kitchen and shouting across the room "Don't put that in there, that's for the worms!" We do both worm composting and garden composting, so I just took a Sharpie to our new bins and labeled them "Worms" and "Not Worms."

Although I hate plastic I took the review to heart that said they'd tried ceramic and glass containers and they strongly recommended plastic.

In case you are wondering yes, these are sized so that a standard grocery bag fits nicely. Reuse, then recycle!

Gnats are gone, stink is gone, mess is gone. A++ Exaco Trading, great product.

2.0 out of 5 stars Large capacity, but ...oh, fruit flies... November 30, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase
My family generates a lot of fruit & vegetable scraps, particularly on the weekends when we do the bulk of our cooking for the week. I was looking for something that had a large capacity so I wasn't making a daily run to the compost pile in the back of my yard. While its capacity is certainly larger, after 3-4 days, we had not only fruit flies, but fruit fly larvae coming out around the filter - ick. We'll probably still use it, but basically just as a larger scrap bucket. I guess my daily pilgrimage to the compost pile is still on...

The product arrived in a timely manner (i love amazon prime) but when I opened the box I was very very disappointed. The ice cream pail I have been using until this arrived is made of more sturdy plastic then this container, and only cost me $5 full of ice cream! The "seal" on the lid is non existant. I can totally see how maggots and fruit flies could get in and out very easily. There were no instructions. The box contained the pail, and a small piece of rounded green plastic that I have no idea what it's for or where it fits. After close examination of pictures, I found I'm missing part of the lid that must snap over the carbon filter to hold it in place. Great! Ugh! But still can't figure out where the little green piece of round plastic goes. This is poorly constructed and I wouldn't pay more than $2 for this. Go out and get an ice cream bucket and enjoy the ice cream before you punch holes in the lid and tape a carbon filter over them. That will work just as good as this piece of junk. I'm sending it back for a refund!

1.0 out of 5 stars lid broke December 26, 2010
By IYU
Amazon Verified Purchase
The lid broke at the hinge after a couple of months. I didn't have a smell problem and was not planning on purchasing filters, but they are a requirement, not an option because they cover holes on top of the container. The filters start to grow mold after a while if not changed. Looking for a replacement compost collector. Wasn't worth the $20.

3.0 out of 5 stars not worth the money March 7, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase
I was disappointed when this product arrived. It is made from a thin plastic and seems as though it will crack or break easily. There is an option to hang the product, yet it doesn't come with mounting screws. Also, it arrived dirty. It was coated in some sort of oily, black dust. If you can find it for $8-10 I'd say, go for it; otherwise, I'd at least look a little harder for something else.
