Another vistory for Coriolis in the A+ Arena,
By Michael J Woznicki "Michael J Woznicki" (Holland, MA USA) - See all my reviews (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: A+ Exam Prep (Paperback)
Right about now your saying I will be ready to take the A+ Exam in two months. You study for 2-70 question tests, you're reading the A+ Exam Prep book by Coriolis and you've got it down cold. Then we find out that the exam is changing and now what do you do?If you're like me, you get a copy of the A+ Exam Prep adaptive edition. CompTIA is changing the A+ Exam to an adaptive format, removing DOS and Windows 3.X, adding NT Workstation, Windows 98, and Linux and this book will get you more than ready for the new format. Over 1,100 pages of text you have been given tables, pictures, diagrams, screen shots, figures, 450+ review questions, projects, hands-on exercises and a practice test, and that's just the book. The book also includes appendices for error messages; hard drive types, troubleshooting guidelines and more. Coriolis also included, not 1 but 2, cd-roms in their latest edition. CD 1 is the practice test questions in fixed length, adaptive, random and review formats. CD 2is a 1-hour audio review with questions and answers that further enhance the material covered in this book. Coriolis you have done it again - right in the nick of time! The review refers to the HARDCOVER edition

While I thought this book was well written, very informative, I also found it to be too long, and very dry. I would recommend the EXAM CRAM book for the A+ test. If you have other resources they will help you all the better. The Exam Cram book helped me get a 93/91 on the Core/DOS-Win. Good Luck

Good but missing stuff and outdated,
By
This review is from: A+ Exam Prep (Paperback)
I got this book to study for the A+ exams. In the middle of chapter 2 I began realizing that this book is good for reference, good for learning computer history, great for computer history. But lacking in the newer hardware concepts.I have been a tech now for more than 5 years and I recognize everything in the book, but so many new things have poped up in the market. For example the author mentions 32 of Ram to be the highest newest thing, please, that was a few years back. This book should really be updated to make it not only good as a reference or history book, but as a tool

Excellent book for the test and beyond,

This review is from: A+ Exam Prep (Paperback)
I found this book to be a great comprehensive study book for the test and also as a good book to keep in your technical library for afterwards. In many areas in went more indepth then required for the test, which I liked, since the goal of getting certified is not to just pass the test, it is to become a expert in the area the book is about. This is crucial for the job market. Anyhow, great book!A+,Network+,MCP

Not for those with experience,

This review is from: A+ Exam Prep, Adaptive Testing Edition (Hardcover)
I bought this book to prepare for the A+ exam and am somewhat disappointed. The book focused too much on older technologies such as DOS and older legacy systems. For example, the chapter on system boards listed the Pentium MMX and the Pentium II 300 as one of the newest chips!!! In Coriolis' defense, the computer industry can be challenging to keep up with. Even though I checked out CompTIA's web site before purchasing, I was disappointed to find that this book will probably not be sufficient to cover the NT and Win 98, and Linux portions of the new tests. The book DOES offer a very solid foundation in the basics and does an excellent job of explaining the basics. Unfortunately I expected little bit more from a book with a Copyright date of 2000. I expect to have to purchase more prep material despite getting this book because it isn't as up-to-date as I would have preferred.

Poor quality, incorrect information and terrible examples,
By A Customer
This review is from: A+ Exam Prep (Paperback)
After using EXAM PREP to help me get my MSCE and MCSD certifications from Microsoft, I thought I was safe ordering this one sight unseen. BOY WAS I WRONG! The book is poorly organized. The author jumps from topic to topic with little or no concern for separating hardware from software. All examples are so small and most are placed pages away from actual topic it rendered them useless. Sample tests are loaded with incorrect answers, mostly on the Windows 95 and Windows NT related questions. Wherever sample questions involve dial-up networking, watch out not one was correct. It was very clear the author does not know very much about either Windows 95 or Windows NT. . Got burned on this one and will never order another book written by this author. Wish I could give it less than 1 star. Achieved my A+ certification in spite of this study guide. Use any other study guide but this one

Good enough to pass both core & dos/win modules...,

This is the only book I used to prepare for the exams. And I passed it on my first try. Although it has served it's purpose. I suggest that people using it should take the time mapping it out to the "COMPTIA A+ test objectives blueprint". (...especially now that a new version is on the works and will be live soon, or is it already ???)I've taken the time to read the book from cover to cover and it definitely contains information beyond that of the test objectives, making it a good reference material as well.

I used this book to prepare for the A+ exam and it is a great book! It is loaded with up to date information and the author explains each topic with flair. I passed both exams with flying colors and continue to use the book as a source of reference. I suggest you buy this book ASAP!

A good study guide and reference book,
By A Customer
This review is from: A+ Exam Prep (Paperback)
I used this study guide and a bought a cheap pc and practiced my dos commands after reading the book cover to cover and going over the questions countless times for two weeks I took the test. I passed both on the first try. I feel that Ms Andrews did a great job on getting me prepared for the test. I looked at some of the low reviews and they sounded like they needed someone to blame. I studied hard and got my certification and a raise after week's time from recieving my certification. The book is within arms reach if I have any need for reference. If there are any errors I did not see any major ones. Plus you can always go to the publishers web site and get updates. I want to say again the best form of appreciation is getting my certification. It goes to show that hard work and study goes a long way. You can do it... I did.
