I used primarily this book (Kindle version) for about two weeks to study for 70-417 and I passed the exam, first go. Turns out that the mobi version is missing chapter 13 and 14 that cover IPAM and ADFS (as of today, 24th of January 2013), the PDF version contains all chapters. Check your Kindle version and make sure its got all 14 chapters.

I highly recommend this book, it's clear and concise and focuses on what you need to know for the exam.

Exam Ref 70-417 is written for a very specific audience that is already experienced with Windows Server 2008 or 2008R2 but is looking to learn about the new features introduced in Windows Server 2012. With that in mind, J.C. Mackin has done an excellent job at keeping this book tightly focused only on the new features introduced in Server 2012 rather than write a monolithic book on every single feature in Server 2012.

Given that exam references are usually dry and rather esoteric, Mackin should be commended for putting together a concise and accessible overview of the new features. He lays out a logical course by introducing readers to Windows Server 2012 starting with the brand new Server Manager console and then progressing through the new features, including Hyper-V 3.0, Direct Access, IPAM, and NAP, with dedicated chapters.
The inclusion of practice questions at the end of each section will be especially helpful to those studying for the 70-417. Readers will also be appreciative for the numerous `Exam Tip' sections which highlight commands or features that are likely to be encountered as certification exam questions. Lastly, Mackin is kind enough to include guidance specific to readers that are familiar with Server 2008 but not Server 2008R2.

In short, readers familiar with Windows Server 2008 or 2008R2 will be well served by this well focused and concise review of the new and updated features in Windows Server 2012. Readers that are new to Windows Server technology will be much better served by 70-410 to learn the basics.

I used this book as well as the Windows Server 2012 Virtual Labs to prepare for this exam, and did not feel well prepared for the exam. I answered confidentially on all the topics covered in the book, but foundered on the other %50 of the questions.

The book alludes to the fact that the test will not just cover new material, but may also cover older topics as well. Be prepared to study topics that are not even mentioned in this book.

I don't think you can pass the exam solely with this reference guide, but it does a fantastic job of focusing your study. I was able to pass using the CBT Nuggets 70-417 training videos in combination with this book.

This book does the trick. I worked through this book over a 2-week period and then went and passed the exam. The book really narrows down the features and objectives to just those covered by the upgrade exam. It is very well written and easy to work through. It highlights the key differences in Server 2012 and how to take advantage of them.

Each chapter has the cores lesson, exam tip boxes, notes, and a review of objectives covered. There are also practice questions at the end of each chapter. The book is really well written and easily accessible. If you are running Server 2012 either physically or in a VM, you can work through everything along with the book and get good hands-on practice. J.C. Mackin writes in a very accessible style and it is one of my favorite of the MS Press books I have yet to work through.

The big thing about this exam is how widely they are offering this upgrade. If you hold any one of the following 6 designations you can do this one exam and achieve the new MCSA: Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate Windows Server 2012 designation:

MCSA: Windows Server 2008
MCITP: Virtualization Administrator
MCITP: Enterprise Messaging Administrator
MCITP: Lync Server Administrator
MCITP: SharePoint Administrator
MCITP: Enterprise Desktop Administrator

For those of us who hold one or more of these credentials, the 70-417 is an amazing offer. A single-exam upgrade path to the MCSA: Windows Server 2012, for the low costs of $150 that all other MS Cert exams cost now.

I use this book with Windows Server 2012 Unleashed by Rand Morimoto and i was able to clear the exam with a very high score, but if you thing you will buy the book, read it and pass the exam without any efforts, don't try, you need to know the product inside out. This book will help you focus on what you should know, but will not telling you the questions on the exam, so it's not some kind of braidump or cheating way to pass the exam, it should be used to help you focus on what is important to know.

This book is written well for someone who has a great deal of 2008 OS experience and wants to learn the new stuff and how 2012 differs. By no means is it a beginner book. It assumes you already have real world experience with the previous OS and will not hold your hand through learning the basics. All in all a good book.
