This book has an incredible amount of condensed information, a lot that you will definitely not need for the MCAT. To be honest, the biology MCAT is more about reading a passage and answering questions based on your intuition about biology and passage information. There are some questions that test purely information, but only a few. That being said, the most helpful thing for the biology section is coursework, more specifically, a course in intro physiology and intro biology, perhaps genetics.

However, the information in the book is all very good, and it certainly is worth the money. However, I would not recommend studying from it alone.

By the way, I ended up with a 12 in the biology MCAT section, and I honestly didn't go through any of the physiology in this book (which is about half the book). If you do choose to, focus on big ideas rather than details. THe first half of the book is more basic biology, and is probably worth going over.

As a nontraditional student (I majored in psychology before deciding to attempt medical school), I haven't taken many of the undergraduate biology courses that cover material on the MCAT. AMCAS claims that an intro to biology is all that's covered, but I took all of their practice tests, as well as a real one, and know better. There's a surprising amount of biochemical and physiological terminology that you're expected to understand, even though it may not be tested in great detail. Honestly, I doubt I would have scored a 10 without this book (just for reference, my scores were: 12V, 11P, 10B, and a Q in writing). While a 10 may not seem very high, I scored an 8 and 9 on two practice tests, read through this book three times (as the author recommends), and consistently scored 11-12 on the remaining practice exams.

My only recommendation is to buy a useful organic chemistry book. Unfortunately, I took organic right before the MCAT so I didn't bother studying, thinking I was ready (so I don't have any studying recommendations for that subject). I'm fairly certain this oversight is what prevented me from scoring higher than a 10.

I purchased MCAT biology help me study for PCAT, and it is wonderful. The book gives you ton of hints of what kind of questions going to be ask and what to memorize. Pictures and diagrams are wonderful and very helpful. Has plenty practice questions to re-enforce concepts. It is a thin book with 278 pages, so it easy to carry around to different locations. I used for PCAT, but friends of mine borrowed it for other exams and said that it extremely helpful.

The book skips going into any detailed explanation. If you need a book that provides explanations then avoid this book. Find another!!!

Remember, the MCAT is changing in 2015 so do not buy this MCAT product if you plan on taking the 2015 test!

This book is great for a content review if you already have a solid foundation in core biology (physiology, cell-bio, genetics, bio-chem, evolution).

If you aren't fresh with the subject material, you may need to have a good Biology text nearby as a reference to fill in a few holes. The red notes on the sides of the paragraphs are very helpful in helping you stay on track with what's most important to remember. Overall good product, but i plan to buy the examcrackers question book, as there weren't too many quizzes.
