5.0 out of 5 stars Get this book, even if you use OpenOffice Calc!
John Walkenbach is well established as a great spreadsheet mind and is not afraid to share the shortcomings of any software, including Excel 2007. Excel 2007 Formulas continues the tradition of providing, explaining, and demonstrating how formulas work and how you don't have to be intimidated by them. Everything is covered, and I mean everything. And just a note: even if...

3.0 out of 5 stars Virus on CD - Can't Access Files
When I went to access the CD to copy off the e-book and example files, McAfee flagged the CD as having a virus (I don't remember which one) and blocked access to the file. I noticed one other recent comment about the same issue so I suspect multiple copies of the book have the problem. I have contacted the publisher to see if I can get access to the files another way...

This review is from: Excel 2007 Formulas (Mr. Spreadsheet's Bookshelf) (Paperback)
And just a note: even if you use StarOffice/OpenOffice Calc, buy this book since almost all the formulas listed transfer seamlessly into the Open Source spreadsheet, too -- a great value, indeed!

With the recent changes on Excel 2007, in which there were several cosmetic and functional changes, this book is a good option for reference. The author is a real master, no doubt about it, on the CD provided you will see some examples that you would never expected to get out of excel. The only real complaint is in regards to the screen captures on the book, some of them are so POOR quality on resolution that you can hardly see it.
However, I would recommend you this book for those interested on developing sound data analysis skills in the application.

5.0 out of 5 stars When Your Good,....Your Good!, May 13, 2007
This review is from: Excel 2007 Formulas (Mr. Spreadsheet's Bookshelf) (Paperback)
The Author really knows his stuff!!!
Again an accurate, concise, extensive reference tool for the beginner as well as the advanced user. This is my fourth excel book by Mr. Walkenbach and they are all of equal caliber. They all contain general background information as well as information dealing with other programming areas of excel (so that even if you only purchase a book like the VBA programming guide, you will still learn about macro programming and other general excel functions). Like all his books, this one gives the user a complete library of useful and professional approaches towards working with and solving excel problems. Good Job Mr Walkenbach!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference, May 26, 2007
This review is from: Excel 2007 Formulas (Mr. Spreadsheet's Bookshelf) (Paperback)
This book is an excellent reference for Excel formulas. However, the publisher, Wiley, should improve all the screenshots used in Chapter 18 (Pivot Tables) in the next printing - they are all blurred. The same screenshots in its e-book are also blurred.

John Walkenbach's explanation and examples plus the DVD disc makes understanding formulas a lot easier than I expected. I have definitly learned alot about Excel not only about formulas in Visita but his updates on Excel and Power Programming. Keep-up the good work John.

This review is from: Excel 2007 Formulas (Mr. Spreadsheet's Bookshelf) (Paperback)
I have been a long-time fan of John Walkenbach, and have regularly updated my library of his books as I upgrade to newer versions of Excel. Mr. Walkenbach does a great job of breaking down formulas and techniques to get the job done in Excel. Furthermore, he often provides more than one way to solve a problem - generally starting with a basic straightforward example and then moving to a less-obvious but simpler methodology. Therefore, a novice can quickly resolve an issue, while a more experienced developer can streamline (and speed up) the processing time of a formula.

My only complaint about the book (and should be to the embarrassment of the publishers) is that apparently between the preliminary layout and final print, pages were added but the index was not updated. Consequently, sometimes you have to look a few pages forwards or backwards from the index to find what you are looking for. This is not a great testimony to the power of dynamic publishing!
