Mr. Spreadsheet's formula for Excel success

It's been estimated that only 10 percent of Excel users really understand how to get the most from worksheet formulas. If you're ready to join that elite group and start using Excel to its full potential, John Walkenbach is here to show you how.

This in-depth examination of Excel formulas covers worksheet functions, named cells and ranges, and formulas for looking up values and financial calculations. Plus, there's an entire section devoted to powerful array formulas. You'll learn about megaformulas, formula debugging, creating custom worksheet functions with VBA, and more.

Follow Mr. Spreadsheet's lead, and you'll soon be on your way to harnessing all the power Excel has to offer.

Let Mr. Spreadsheet show you how to:

  • Master the new functionality of Excel 2013
  • Understand and use various lookup formulas
  • Create financial formulas for borrowing or investing
  • Work with formulas for conditional formatting
  • Develop custom worksheet functions using VBA

The last one I purchased was for Excel 2000 so this one is a good update.

As usual, Walkenbach does another outstanding job by providing a comprehensive book on Excel. If you can get through it (I wouldn't recommend a straight up read), but the techniques and examples are complete and well worth putting some effort into the material.

I do miss the CD that used to be delivered in the back flap of his work. This provided many examples and quick references at the workstation without lugging out the book. Many authors are providing this in ebook format too which would be greeat.

The author of this book is knowledgeable at making hard technical topics accessible to Excel beginners like me. His updated book comes with tons of help for Excel 2013 and beyond. More specifically, I was able to find a lot of tips, tricks, and techniques extremely practical in creating formulas that do all kinds of calculations for my daily needs. I could also learn developing custom worksheet functions with VBA allowing me not only to automate many repetitive tasks but also saving my time. On the top of it, I can immediately locate relevant information on how to troubleshoot my formulas in case of any unforeseen errors or when something simply goes wrong. The author discusses the utility and location of new features that are introduced with Excel 2013 making relatively easy the transition between old and new version of Excel software. There are also included step by step explanations how to create and fine tune financial formulas giving me opportunity to analyze the actual cash flows more effectively adding value in understanding the entire process. I was able to get hands-on experience using various lookup formulas, working with conditional formatting, and developing custom functions making my Excel life more productive and less frustrating. I only hope I had this book right at the beginning of my Excel course. It beats most, if not all, textbooks out there. The book presents and discusses exactly what you need for a task at hand and when you exactly need it as opposed to the mentioned textbooks, which are not only beating around the bush, but are adding unnecessary layers of confusions and bad directions making you only stray away from your task at hand or ultimately just keeping away from such a productive software package as Excel altogether. Thumbs up! In two words - Textbook killer.

Covers it all, Formulas from A-Z. Even gets you started with VBA. Great book for reference, or to read end to end. Maintains it's value with a great appendix as well. Decided to get Power Programming with VBA after reading, and within 2 weeks of nightly reading I was able to create Workbooks with basic User Forms and advanced functions.

Definitely recommend for Beginners and Intermediate Excel users looking to establish or enhance their skills.

Concise and thorough, Walkenbach has the knowledge and experience to provide useful formulas for a great variety of situations. The formulas are parsed for easy understanding and everything has examples, often more than one. The layout is clear and the annotations are consistently helpful.

I really like the product, it seems complete. However, I can't access the website to download the spreadsheets they use in the examples. www.wiley.com/go/excel2013formulas redirects me to the selling website not anywhere where I could download the .xlsx files.
Other than that it is a very good product.

If you need to learn formulas or a quick guide to finding out what formula you need, this is the book to get. This is my second book from this author, he doesn't disappoint. Had to upgrade from his Excel 2003 formulas book to keep up with the times.
