3.0 out of 5 stars E-Book
Excellent E-book to learn Excel VBA programming! Author is extremely knowledgeable about the subject. Only 2 issues I have some of the images are unreadable and the Publisher does not have the CD content available for download.

While everyone's starting to learn cooler hipper languages, the reality is that VBA in excel is still pretty darn useful.

If you have absolutely no experience then VBA for dummies is still - to me - one of the better places to start. The book is not as big and intimidating. However, after you've already written a few programs, this book is fantastic. Great step by step instructions. Lots of examples. Advanced sections are great. It will take me some time before this all becomes old hat for me.

If you were looking for something that uses VBA to link to other Microsoft applications. You should be good with this book. It goes into detail on how to interface with outlook, deal with sending emails, interface with Word or PowerPoint.

If you need to learn how to interface with databases, this is not the best choice. But there is no reason to believe it would be in the title or table of contents, so you really can't complain.

Will it replace the all mighty google. No, but as a supplement, it is excellent and a bit more structured. The explanations are far better than what you'd find on-line. There are tons of random helpful tips and history that - if you're nerdy enough to read the whole book rather than just use the table of contents and index to get to the sections you need - are pretty darn wonderful.

Oh, and for people who can't stand the upgrades in the new version of Excel, the author explains that stuff too. One reason to get the newer vs the older version.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book to learn Excel VBA, November 22, 2010

I tried the Bill Jelen "VBA and Macros" book first but got too frustrated with it. Too much was left "un-said" in that book. So, even though I was forcing myself to learn from it, I decided to get this book too.

WOW! John Walkenbach does a great job of starting at the beginning, giving a very interesting spreadsheet background, and then quickly and concisely plunging you into the VBA world. I have also picked up a lot of non-VBA great Excel tips that I have started using.

Keep in mind, this book still isn't for the timid. It is serious learning and you have to be prepared to learn quick. But, I feel the book does a great job of teaching with just the right amount of detail. It also helps if you think very logical and sequential. If you can't organize your thoughts, you won't be able to program very well.

I was surprised at the quality of the instruction in this book. It seems to be much more informative of Excel's features than books I have read for prior versions of Excel. I always have considered myself an expert in Excel. This book has shown me wrong. There is a multitude of features and functions that I am extremely happy to see excellent instruction for.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Book, Not So Good Paper, March 9, 2011

This review is from: Excel 2010 Power Programming with VBA (Mr. Spreadsheet's Bookshelf) (Paperback)
The content of this book is reasonable, but it is more in the format of a reference than a tutorial, which is what I was expecting from the description. The presentation is easy to understand. My major frustration is the paper which is in my opinion just one step above pulp. The book is very hard to read in less than very bright light due to the low reflectivity of the paper. I expect better from a book at this price.

I have the Office 2007 software, but this book is very applicable. Book provides a comprehensive introduction to the ribbon interface. VBA is very well explained. I had a hard time learning VBA 15 years ago on my own because I could not see the overall structure of the program. Now this book makes it so much easier. I wish a book like this existed back then. It has a lot of pages, but they go by quickly. If you know a little bit about programming in any language, I think this book makes EXCEL/VBA easy to learn. Best of all, the 2010 paperback version includes an eBook in the enclosed CD. So you can have a copy in your iPad for when you don't want to lug the large book around. VBA in a Nutshell is probably a good companion reference for looking up all VBA commands in all office applications, such a Word or Outlook.

John has a very easy and clear way to pass on his knowledge.
He gives a lot of examples and takes the time to explane every part of it
This book is THE tool you want if you need to know everything about programming Excel with that beautifull Office Language called VBA.
The bookpaper quality is not so great compare to the 2003 version of it. But this forces you to handle this book with the gentle 'égards' that its great content deserves :-) (égards = french for esteem/respect)

I participated in a one day class that only showed me the potential of VBA. This book does a great job of making programming a reality. The history of excel section turned out to be more useful than I imagined. The book is very well written with powerful examples. I look forward to making VBA a routine part of my work flow.

This review is from: Excel 2010 Power Programming with VBA (Mr. Spreadsheet's Bookshelf) (Paperback)
I had used VBA for Excel before, but it was quite informal and I only learned through studying other VBA programs. So I wasn't exactly a beginner, but I wanted a book to help me brush up on my abilities and serve as a reference in the future. Excel 2010 Power Programming with VBA was a perfect fit. Includes plenty of example files that are useful not only for demonstration, but also for borrowing some techniques and ideas for your own needs. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking to learn how to use VBA. At less than $30 and nearly a thousand pages of quality instruction and examples, it's hard to find a better value.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!, December 9, 2011

This review is from: Excel 2010 Power Programming with VBA (Mr. Spreadsheet's Bookshelf) (Paperback)
This book was excactly what I was looking for and I am very happy that I bought it. All the examples are clear and to the point. The book starts with basic things and then slowly advances to more detailed and sophisticated programming methods. On the way, there are useful tips that help the reader to adapt better and more cost-efficient programming. The red line is - like it says in the title - in the power programming, i.e. how to program efficient, clear, structured, and powerful VBA code.

If you are interested in Excel 2010 and VBA then this is definately your choice. Highly recommended!
