Very sturdy feel.

I love this because it has a fairly flat bottom so food drains faster and better and it has sturdy handles and feet that lift it up off of the sink bottom.

I bought this nearly a year ago, and even though I don't use it every week, it has been wonderful every time I have.

When I bought this in late December, 2011, Amazon's price was just under eleven (you can track price histories for many items sold at Amazon including this colander at camelcamelcamel and traktor). I bought it for a friend without realizing that it is so big that it would barely fit in her sink, so I bought her a different colander and kept this one. I wanted to replace the ancient aluminum colander I'd been using anyway, and because my sinks are large, the large size of this one was not a problem.

It's nicer quality than I'd anticipated, and so far nothing I've drained in it, such as starchy items such as cooked spaghetti and boiled potatoes, has stuck to the mesh and I haven't had to struggle to get the mesh clean (I think it is probably a good idea to rinse it right after it's been used to drain or rinse anything that could conceivably stick to the mesh).

How big is it, exactly? From the outer edge of one handle to the outer edge of the other it measures just under 15 1/2 inches. An old vinyl LP record laid on top extends a bit past the colander's rim, and the rim of the colander I got measures just under 11 1/2 inches. It is about 4 inches high from rim to base, but if I measure from the top edge of a handle down to the base, the measurement is closer to 4 1/2 inches (one might want to know these measurements when thinking about how one might store the colander; I hang mine from a push pin on the side of a cabinet above a sink and the push pin supports its weight just fine - it weighs just under a pound).

I have two, one small and one quite large. I use both of them for tons of stuff. I like the flat bottom and the construction is very sturdy. I love the soft handles and how you can span many sizes of bowl with them. I am very glad I purchased them, and look forward to many years of use.

I really like this colander. All I had before were plastic ones with small holes in bottom and tiny slits on the sides. It lets all the water out quickly. Good for rinsing lettuce too. When you drain pasta, make sure you rinse the colander off right away cause the starchy water will dry on it and is a little harder to get off.

I use this in homebrewing and it is perfect. I put it on my fermentation bucket, and pour the wort through the colander to filter out the hops and aerate the wort. Works perfect!

I use this colander with a sheet of cheesecloth to make Greek style yogurt. It easily holds a gallon of yogurt, and the legs enable it to sit in a flat dish to drain the yogurt. The inside is smooth and well finished so it doesn't snag the cheesecloth. It cleans up easily in the top rack of my dishwasher. I have used it many times with no problems.

I was looking to replace an old mesh colander that had one long handle. Apparently those are hard to find, and the ones I did see are cheaply made. So I settled for this, and am glad I did. It is just the right size--from handle to handle is 15 1/2"; it easily fits atop a double sink that measures 14". Draining is so easy; no need to worry about steam/hot food anymore because it's now a hands-free operation. This is a generous-sized and well-made colander. I should have bought it sooner.

Pro: Good size for washing/draining large amounts of vegetables. Only choice for draining angel hair pasta. Comes in very handy for rinsing rice and herbs. Very sturdy feel.

Con: Watch out for tiny wire ends around upper rim; I have been stuck multiple times drawing blood. The only reason I deleted a star from the rating. Would not be an issue if you only handled this by its handles, but when washing it or putting it up you will come in contact with the wires.

I bought this strainer specifically for home brewing. It's sized perfectly to sit in a 5 gallon bucket or an 8 gallon primary fermenter with the handles supported by the bucket rim. This makes it easy to strain wort or must without needing a helper!
