Full Year of Spelling on CD, January 5, 2009

Phonetic Zoo is first of all very easy on the teacher which is a huge bonus! I go over the words and the spelling rule and then the student puts on the earphones and listens as the spelling rule is read and then the spelling word is said in a sentence. The student writes the words and then corrects his work as the spelling is read to him.
A lot of the spelling rules are helpful but there are a number of them that make no sense, for example, "Voiced and Whispered Consonants. The voiced 'batch' becomes the whispered 'patch' The voiced 'zipper' becomes the whispered 'slipper'" There is no explanation for this rule and the two words sound the same to me, not voiced and whispered. [Read the comment below for an explanation of this whispered and voiced consonants]
Sensible rules like, "The sound 'ow' in the middle of words is usually 'o-u'" That's true and it makes sense.
My son loves to get 100 % and then gets to put the completed card up in the wall to show his success.
A bonus with buying one level is that the other two levels of spelling appear on the cards as well so you could use them the following year if you didn't need the CD or another child could use the higher or lower level on the card as well.
The cost is a bit steep but it is a full year of spelling and the teacher can be very hands off .

great spelling program, September 4, 2008

My eight year old is using this for the first time and really likes it. She can do most of her spelling on her own with this program and she likes it much better than workbooks. She listens to the jingles and rules then takes the test and corrects it on her own all by listening to the included CD. We use this as our homeschool spelling and phonics and are really happy with it so far.

We finally found a great spelling program!, December 8, 2010

We have stuggled to find a great spelling program for a number of years. With excellence in spelling my children are able to advance at their own pace, after mastering each lesson. The best part is, I don't have to spend large amounts of time getting them to study spelling words, giving tests, or correcting! This program works so that the student takes full responsibility for study, administering, and correcting their own tests! Plus, we've seen results! My children are doing better than ever with their spelling! It is worth every penny of investment! (just a side note: I have 5 children and only one of my children didn't do well with the program, he's a VERY hands on and visual learner and I ended up switching him to another program, but I feel like he's an exception. I really like this program and recommend it highly)
