5.0 out of 5 stars SImply The Best Book For Our Industry
I'm in the Financial Services industry, and I've read about 30-40 books in my career on all topics: selling, marketing, etc. Many are too broad-based, and don't get into the details of financial services/investments in particular.

Nick Murray does - period. This is the one I keep coming back to, reading it over and over again to pick up different ideas with each...

1.0 out of 5 stars Basic Info Fluffed Up to 400 Pages
This would have made a great 40-page book.

As such, it's an excellent review of basic concepts. Example: You need a certain number of rejections before you score a win, fear of rejection is your number one enemy, set aside time to prospect and reward yourself everytime you do a set number of prospect calls.

But 400 pages? C'mon!

The dust jacket gives some telling...

This review is from: The Excellent Investment Advisor (Hardcover)
I'm in the Financial Services industry, and I've read about 30-40 books in my career on all topics: selling, marketing, etc. Many are too broad-based, and don't get into the details of financial services/investments in particular.

Nick Murray does - period. This is the one I keep coming back to, reading it over and over again to pick up different ideas with each reading, and to solidify those already in my memory. I have often found myself using quotes and ideas from this book as though they were mine. My clients absolutely love (and very often agree) with the logic depicted in this incredible book. "Incredible" because it hits home on just about every issue someone in financial services would be concerned with: prospecting, trust, building and maintaining relationships, and, most important, the proper perspective on the markets and the long-term goals of your clients.

Unfortunately, there's not enough space here to go into all the details, but I'll sum up by saying that, having found this book three years ago, I'll never need another on the subject. This book lives in my briefcase, and is highlighted and marked up throughout. A gem.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally! a how to book for the financial advisor., June 8, 1999

This review is from: The Excellent Investment Advisor (Hardcover)
This book should be kept in a glass case that should read: "Break glass when you need inspiraton and motivation". This is a book for any financial advisor no matter how long you have been in the business. It captures the most important part of the business, prospecting and servicing and keeping existing clients. Nick murray also does a fantastic job of explaning why advisors should move to a resudial business. My production went up 50% in a year after reading this book. I have now read it 5 times and I learn something new each time. A must have for enjoyment and a reference manual.

5.0 out of 5 stars Every Investment Advisor should read this book, June 26, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Excellent Investment Advisor (Hardcover)
This is the best book I've ever read on how to run an investment advisory firm. Nick Murray is almost a "philosopher" in the financial advisory industry. His focus is the client and he helps keep advisors focused on what's really important. Namely, client expectations & the sometimes peculiar investment actions clients try to take at the "wrong" times (like selling quality investments because the markets decided to go down for a time).

5.0 out of 5 stars Caring and integrity in practice, August 3, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Excellent Investment Advisor (Hardcover)
This is a WONDERFUL book! The pages radiate these themes: care about your clients and their families, always do the right thing, build your investment business on relationships, not transactions, what is important is time in the market rather than timing the market, believe in what you recommend, your most important product is yourself (ie, your concern and integrity), people don't care what you know until they know that you care, etc. This book should be required reading for all people starting out in the investment business. It is not only a "how to" book, but also a much needed book on ethics by a well respected financial journalist. Many, many brokers and financial planners have profited greatly from Nick Murray's magazine columns, and his earlier books, "Serious Money: The Art of Marketing Mutual Funds" and "Gathering Assets". This newest work is his best yet. It clearly points financial consultants toward fee based rather than comm! ission based business as the "wave" of the future. Reading this book is like listening to a wise mentor. Buy two copies; one for yourself and one for a new colleague!

5.0 out of 5 stars Enlightening and Entertaining - a definite "must read"!!, March 26, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Excellent Investment Advisor (Hardcover)
If only every person involved in the investment business would read AND follow the advice in this book, what a wonderful world this would be! As a registered rep. at an investment company, I hear many horror stories about "crooked" advisors that are "only out for the buck". My wish is for everyone who deals with the public to care enough about their clients to read this book over and over and over again.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the most helpful books I have ever read!!!, August 1, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Excellent Investment Advisor (Hardcover)
This book has everything that is most important to an investment professional. It has genuinely helpful and heartfelt advice about the importance of what we do, a belief system, how to move people to action, prospecting, markets, and just about everything but technical details. It is good from beginning to end not to mention stylish and worth much more than I payed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Book On the Business I Have Ever Read, July 15, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Excellent Investment Advisor (Hardcover)
I have been in the investment business for three years and have read a lot of books about how to market, sell and provide advice, but this is heads above the rest. Anyone can benefit by reading this. Great chapters on prospecting and building trust through honesty. In addition, very witty writing. Rookie or pro, this is the one book that can help everyone make more money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nick Made Me Successful, April 29, 2003
This review is from: The Excellent Investment Advisor (Hardcover)
I've been an investment adviser for more than 20 years. Recently read Nick's new book, The New Financial Adviser, and realized how much I have been influenced by (and profited from) his advice. If you really care about your clients and want to base your business on the truths of investing and financial planning, this book (and his new one) will do more than any other to "get your mind right." You can't predict markets, so forget timing. You won't consisetnly add value by shifting from fund to fund, either. You can significantly affect how well your clients do by investing as much as possible in equities and keeping them invested, modifying their behavior (much more controllable). Over the years, this will make more money for your clients than any new fund or hot stock. Nick says it better, of course, so read this book over and over until you get it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Cut through the clutter---this is the one., January 23, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: The Excellent Investment Advisor (Hardcover)
Pull out a set of index cards, and prepare to write down for future memorization the most important statements, so you can use them in front of prospects and clients. You will find yourself needing another stack of cards by the 5th chapter.

This book is to the point. You can easily get overwhelmed with information when entering this business. Here's the answer: If you read one book on the business of investing other people's money, THIS BOOK IS THE ONE.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid Effort Yet Needs a Little Balance, April 29, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Excellent Investment Advisor (Hardcover)
Murray's book is great for those who are considering becoming a financial advisor. It is polished and easy to read...Nick's writing about limiting account size minimums to $250,000 not realistic for most. Murray is good at presenting the "Big Picture" of being an advisor and the image to project...a good book for those pondering a career change to being an investment advisor.
