Book Description

"The Exceptional Child: Inclusion in Early Childhood Education" provides a well-written presentation of high quality educational programs for young children with developmental disabilities. This discerning text combines the research, experience, and talent of the experts with real-life perspectives, written by parents of children with disabilities and of those typically developing children. Using the NAEYC guidelines for developmentally appropriate practice as a foundation for programs for all young children, it expands upon the inclusion approach to promote successful learning environments for children with developmental disabilities. It offers proven recommendations for practical application, as well as a problem-solving framework for dealing with challenging behavior. The color insert describing varying developmental domains provides a quick, yet thorough summary. Also added to this edition are increased discussions of cultural, racial, and linguistic diversity, as well as updates on the most recent laws for certification, new findings in neuroscience relevant to very young children, and internet-based resources. As an up-to date source of reference in this area of special education, all in the profession will find this work a text of choice.

(REAL NAME)
I have been teaching a course on Exceptional Development for a university for about 5 years now, and have used this textbook all the way through. This book is FANTASTIC. It is easy to read, easy to follow, and set up in a logical manner. It gives a nice broad overview of exceptional development, and I recommend my students keep this book to refer to in the futre as well. Highly recommended!
