Good Foundational Book!,
By "singingigo81" (New Jersey) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Exceptional Learners: Introduction to Special Education (Hardcover)
I really like the way this book is presented. It provides a really concise yet complete overview of the disabilities most commonly encountered. I also like the pages in the back of each chapter that give teaching strategies in respect to the disability discussed. This is a great book for general educators looking for some information on disabilities and for those beginning to learn about special education. This book gives a great foundation for all the other special education courses that follow it. Great book!

Good coverage, LOTS of typos!,
This review is from: Exceptional Learners: Introduction to Special Education (with Casebooks for Reflection and Analysis) (10th Edition) (Hardcover)
Though this book is a great introduction to special education, I was surprised by the number of technical errors and typos it contained. I'd say I found at least 2-3 in each chapter! Certainly this doesn't affect the quality of the information, but when I read a textbook (particularly when I pay as much as I did for this one), I expect a thoroughly professional presentation. I was quite unimpressed with whoever did the text editing for this book. I also hate books that have lots of margin notes (the kind that are meant to act as a 'quick find' tool), extra text boxes, etc. - it makes it much more difficult to read sequentially.

The edition should speak for itself. As a special educator and in training to become a teacher educator, I have been using this book as a resource/reference for 8 years now and it keeps getting better: )

Yes, this was a text required for my class, but I find myself reading it just for the knowledge it contains, assigned or not. Well written, and quite comprehensive. A very complex topic addressed intelligently.

Great price but missing something,

I was amazed at the price of this book, which was considerably cheaper than the UNLV bookstore. However, there is a reason. It does not come with the accompanying paperback that the UNLV bookstore version did. Luckily my class did not require reading in the paperback (it had vignettes) but if I had needed it I would have been in trouble.

Bought 10th edn from Amazon. Realized pages 482 - 514 were missing just two days before the test. Called Pearson (publisher). They were absolutely unaccommodating. Then called Amazon, who replaced the book by next day delivery.

I bought this book for my class because it was required. It's a great read and the price was unbeatable. This book will remain in my library for future reference.

Exceptional Learners 11th Edition- Not All Components Included,

I was disappointed after I bought this book, because I ended up having to buy another copy (for $170) at my university bookstore. The version that I bought at the university bookstore came in a shrink-wrapped package containing the book, a cd-rom, and a supplemental text. I needed all three of these components for my class, and the book that I bought from amazon.com did not have the cd-rom or the supplemental texts. So, if you need these components, be sure to find out from the buyer if they are included in your purchase.
