Book Description

0135026962 978-0135026960 December 28, 2008 6

Through real-life stories about children, their families, and their teachers, and through the use of the most recent evidence-based research on special education, this important book provides students with a comprehensive introduction to special education and its relationship to general education. The sixth edition provides this experience within the framework of three guiding themes: Inclusion, Partnerships, and Universal Design for Learning.

Long noted for its focus on progress in general education through inclusion, families, and parent-professional partnerships, the new sixth edition of Exceptional Lives: Special Education in Today's Schools, now includes a “Values and Outcomes” end-of-chapter feature that focuses on ideal educational results as well as IEP marginal notes that allow readers to link content to practical lessons.

New to this Edition!

  • NEW! “Values and Outcomes”sections appear at the end of each chapter to discuss the ideal educational outcomes for each student presented in the opening vignette — outcomes that can occur if teachers put highly effective, research-based strategies into practice and uphold the values addressed throughout the book.
  • NEW! IEP Margin Notes are integrated throughout each chapter to help inform teachers of their role in the IEP process in relation to chapter content video clips on MyEducationLab reinforce this IEP focus. Both IEP features help link content with a practical focus.
  • MyEducationLab! To package this text with the book-specific version of MyEdLab use this ISBN: 0-136-10141-0

2.0 out of 5 stars Generally well written and useful book with a few really annoying issues..., October 27, 2010
    Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Exceptional Lives: Special Education in Today's Schools (6th Edition) (Paperback)
I found the book to be generally well written and the content comprehensive and meaningful. The personal stories that lead off each chapter are engaging and help to make the material easier to digest. However, I detested the layout of the book. The primary content is constantly interrupted with a myriad of sidebars, inserts and margin tips vomited all over the pages. Unfortunately, this is a concept that is all too common in modern textbooks. I find it distracting and insulting. Apparently, the reading public is too stupid to stay engaged with content unless we are dazzled with "interesting" layouts and Lord knows we can't digest information unless it's parceled out to us in small doses.

As annoyed as I was by the book's layout, I was even more annoyed and frustrated with the fact that the book is supposed to come with access to an online learning lab-- mycomputerlab.com. The website claims that an access code is supposed to be provided with the book and must be entered in order to use any of the website features. Well, I found no access code anywhere on the book or in the packaging. Considering that the book cost over $100 (excessive for a paperback book printed on cheap paper) I am not interested in paying another $40 to get access to a website that I should already be authorized to use.

My 2 star rating reflects 4 stars for information and content, 3 stars for the generally inspirational stories preceding each chapter, 1 star for the hyperkinetic layout, and 0 stars for ripping me off on the access code.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional Book, September 29, 2009
    Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Exceptional Lives: Special Education in Today's Schools (6th Edition) (Paperback)
This is really good book as it is easy to read and very clear. It is well set out and although it is very expensive it is well worth buying as you can use it as a reference tool even after your class or course has ended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Book in said condition, August 7, 2009
This review is from: Exceptional Lives: Special Education in Today's Schools (6th Edition) (Paperback)
The book arrived neatly wrapped and in perfect shape. This book has an online companion site, and you need an access code for the site. I'm afraid that the code was on a piece of paper in the plastic wrap that I threw away, because I could find it no where in the book. So I had to pay an additional $40 dollars or so to access the online site. Just be sure to look carefully at the packaging before throwing it away!!
