silly book, lots of fun, January 26, 2000
This review is from: An Excess of Enchantment (Paperback)
I suppose you'd have to have a certain sense of humor when reading this book (as with any of the other Wuntvor books). It's hilarious, it's intentioanlly cliche, and it's just so much fun to read. I wish it weren't out of print, or else I'd buy this for all my fun loving friends! =o)

This review is from: An Excess of Enchantment (Paperback)
I generally don't read fantasy fiction, but the book cover caught my eye, and the back cover description sounded like it might be fun. It was, for a brief while, then it wore very, very thin.
The premise of characters being trapped by "Mother Duck" to act in her live-action fairy tales was initially amusing. But it quickly grew boring. The same thing over and over.
Likewise, the characters were one-note creations. The wolf, for example, had basically one line throughout the book: "Wouldn't it be great to have a talking wolf in the story?" Mother Duck had a couple of lines she repeated, notably, "What have I done to deserve this?"
I counted 30 characters, a lot to keep track of despite their being one-dimensional.
The writing was cliched. The anachronistic aspect was amusing at first, but grew tiresome.
The point of view shifted from third to first person for no apparent reason, which was not so much confusing as annoying.
The plot was rather thin as well. (I did not know when I started it that this was the second book of a trilogy. There was very fine print on the cover that indicated this.) Perhaps the first book better explained the plot of this one. So, the book didn't really end -- a new problem presented itself, which is no doubt resolved in the third book.
Except I won't waste any more time than I already have.
