Nothing Excess About It,

Another winner from this talented group - If you aren't familiar with The Palladian Ensemble, or with the music of Locke or Matteis, you should be. This is chamber music at its finest. Of particular interest is the sound of the baroque 5 - course guitar, an instrument played by no less a person than His Majesty King Charles II Himself (as I learned from the highly informative program notes.) I usually program my CD player for continous play when I put this album on; so will you.

A Remarkable Group,

Talented musicians, wonderful music. Ms. Thorby not only has astonishing technique, her recorder sound is remarkably clear and powerful. Judging by the enclosed notes, Mr. Carter is as good a writer as he is a musician. This album is thoroughly enjoyable. An excess of the Palladian Ensemble is simply not enough.

I am by far not an expert, but this music was so beautiful I cried. It really lives up to the title, which says it all.

Just Magnificent - much of the work is stunning,

Beautifully intoned and recorded instrumental work, featuring some of the most clear and excellent studio/recording work I've encountered (performances notwithstanding.) Aside from the exquisite choices of instrumental pieces and their delightful, substantial (even - manicured) execution.
The cello (and bassoon) work is particularly splendidly, lushly rendered. One (and only) drawback: while many of the pieces are delightful, I can't say I'm entirely enamored of every piece they chose to include. The general thrust though is that it is overall, an exquisite, thoughtful collection! |
