Book Description

June 1969 0879010045 978-0879010041
Since it was first published three decades ago, Excursions Into Mathematics has been one of the most popular mathematical books written for a general audience. Taking the reader for short "excursions" into several specific disciplines of mathematics, it makes mathematical concepts accessible to a wide audience. The Millennium Edition is updated with current research and new solutions to outstanding problems that have been discovered since the last edition was printed, such as the solution to the well-known "four-color problem." Excursions Into Mathematics: The Millennium Edition is an exciting revision of the original, much-loved classic. Everyone with an interest in mathematics should read this book.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"It is a cross between providing mathematical challenge and a cultural placement of some famous problems. I hope it will persuade non-mathematicians that mathematics is worthwhile, and provide mathematicians with some background to the personalities and history of the main stream, and, equally as important, to the quiet little-visited back-waters of their subject." -Tony Crilly, The Mathematical Gazette , March 2002 --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Especially recommended for students of mathematics., February 3, 2000
Now fully updated and expanded, this New Millennium edition of Excursions Into Mathematics takes the reader on short "excursions" into several specific disciplines in the field of mathematics and explains mathematical concepts in such an easy, "user friendly" manner as to make them interesting and accessible to the non-specialist general reader. Anatole Beck, Michael N. Bleicher, and Donald W. Crowe have collaborated in this exciting revision to include new research and solutions to outstanding problems that have been solved since the previous edition published in 1969. Excursions Into Mathematics is a highly recommended introduction for any reader with an interest in mathematics, and has a great deal to recommend it to anyone wanting a refresher on mathematics and the progress made over the past three decades.
