Book Description

For those who approach Buddhism as a system of mental development, this book is a reliable and accessible guide to understanding the significance of themes from the Pali discourses. Themes include grasping, right view, craving, passion, contemplation of feeling, happiness, and liberation. A rare combination of scholarly rigor and extensive meditation experience from the author provides veracity to these studies and explorations.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Bhikkhu Analayo is one of our most brilliant monastic scholars of early Buddhism, combining meticulous scholarship with a deep understanding rooted in years of diligent meditation practice. The present book, a wide-ranging collection of canonical studies, offers trustworthy insights into the core concepts that shape the “thought-world” of the Buddha’s teachings.”  —Bhikkhu Bodhi, author, The Noble Eightfold Path: Way to the End of Suffering

“It would be hard to overstate the contribution Ven. Analayo makes to our understanding of the Buddha’s teachings. His breadth and depth of knowledge, clarity of expression, and wise reflections make his writings a treasured gift of Dharma.”  —Joseph Goldstein, author, A Heart Full of Peace and One Dharma

5.0 out of 5 stars Another masterpiece of Buddhist writing by Analayo September 2, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
At the onset, I confess to setting high expectations for this book. The author's previous book called simply Sattipatana: The Direct Path to Realization represents the clearest explanation of one of the essential teachings of the Buddha familiarly translated as the Four Foundations of Mindfulness. Can a second book by the same author measure up? It certainly can, although its subject matter and approach are completely different. Sattipatana followed the outline and content of a single sutta of the Buddha, expanding and explaining it. This book, as noted in its introduction, is a series of foundational essays the author revised from the Encyclopedia of Buddhism, Sri Lanka. Its sweep is vast, from craving to emptiness, but the author's genius for clarity remains ever present.

As its title suggests, this book is laden with references to the Pali Discourses which, while giving it authenticity, can at times seem distracting. However, there can be no question about the author's understanding since he duly expands each subject with shades of meaning from the multiply referenced suttas.

Don't let this book escape your attention. One suggestion; scan the table of contents using Amazon's "Look Inside" feature and if any of the chapter heads are areas for your inquiries (and they definitely should be), purchase the book and consider the remaining chapters a bonus. Better yet, buy the book and read it from cover to cover, again and again. Like its predecessor by Analayo, this book is a real must read gold mine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Straightforward March 3, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Using a few keywords and phrases, Bhikkhu Analayo lays out the structure for practice in simple terms, based on the Pali canon which he frequently cites. It is not a book detailing how to meditate or practice. This book is more helpful toward understanding the conceptual framework in which one applies effort toward meditation and practice. At the same time, it well explains the keywords that form the topic of each chapter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely wonderful! November 22, 2013
Format:Paperback
I very much enjoyed this book. The first book was iconic, and excellent, but this book was more helpful to my practice. I could not put it down as it explained every aspect of Insight meditation in an easy-to-read format. Subjects I previously considered rather boring came alive to me with real meaning. Thank you BA

5.0 out of 5 stars Depth and Nuance July 4, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The author examines a number of words and terms from the Pali canon elaborating with depth and nuance on their meaning, interpretation and potential for application to practice. This not a book for beginners, but, as a quick scan of the contents (as another reviewer also recommends) on Amazon will reveal, this book is pretty much of a must-have for all serious students and practitioners of the Theravada tradition.

A fantastic exposition and an anthology of various subtle concepts related to the Dharma. A great supplement to his sine qua non Satipatthana Sutta!
