Editorial Reviews

Rarely does a debut album showcase the characteristics usually associated with seasoned recording and touring acts. PHOENIX MOURNING’s Metal Blade Records debut, "When Excuses Become Antiques" is the exception to that rule. Brought to the label’s attention by legendary producers Tom and Jim Morris, who have worked with everyone from Marilyn Manson to Puff Daddy to Sepultura to Ozzy Osbourne to Public Enemy, PHOENIX MOURNING’s thirteen-song debut oozes with track after track of spot on metal/screamo arena worthy anthems of youthful angst and personal discovery. Creating music that thrives on the emotions that ultimately speak as a novel to their lives, the members of PHOENIX MOURNING have been blessed with the ability to share their personal stories through well crafted and expertly performed songs. Album standouts include "A New Décor", "From Afar" and "Waiting For The King". Destined to be one of the breakthrough releases of 2006, PHOENIX MOURNING has already become a "friends" favorite on MYSPACE and PURVOLUME, where, in a very short amount of time, the band continues to cultivate supporters at an alarming rate!

5.0 out of 5 stars unbelievable debut, April 25, 2006
This review is from: When Excuses Become Antiques (Audio CD)
I've been following these guys since their demos were up on mp3.com. I remember they were referenced to Linkin Park back when linkin park wasn't mainstream. Well these guys aren't quite in linkin park's genre at all...but the songs on this album are all amazing.
I'm not really sure what group of bands these guys would fall under because their label is mostly death metal/hardcore but I would group Phoenix Mourning's sound with some bands like dead poetic, underoath, and 36 crazyfists. Anyway I freakin love their sound it's unique and blends throaty screams with awesome melody.
Highlights: Across 26 Winters, Waiting for the King, From Afar

4.0 out of 5 stars For the fence straddlers, September 6, 2006
This review is from: When Excuses Become Antiques (Audio CD)
Ok, sure this may not be true metal but, I still thought it was good. I'm hard to please with music, either they growl too much or the riffs aren't heavy enough. This was right up my alley. If you like bands like Mudvayne and Mushroomhead, then you'll probably like these guys too.

5.0 out of 5 stars TOO BAD, January 15, 2011
By
This review is from: When Excuses Become Antiques (Audio CD)
This is no longer a band but the whole cd is good ignore all the people that rated this lower than 5. If you like the sound the entire cd is good and I suggest you buy the cd. Other than that my favorite song on the cd is Niche' but the best song on the cd has to be One January Mourning. The cd is good and it has the perfect mix of scream and singing this is not screamo thou so don't think that closest thing I could put with it is a faster paced Poison the Well or close to Haste the Day but that is not close sorry people this band had a good sound and it is hard to place with other bands that is the best I can come up with. And lol post-hardcore is not right god nice tag wish I could delete it.
