I gave this dvd a 4 instead of a 5 only because of its cover. this movie is one of the best old school kungfu flix. It has great action and comedy. this is the movie that introduced the villan Pai Mei the biggest bad##% (recently seen in Kill Bill Vol. 2). The video quality is great and it has Chinese and English audio. Sadly no special feature which is too bad since they should have gotten Chen Kwan Tai who did an interview in Hereos Two (distributed by another company).
What is bad is the cover. First why is he holding a sword, this is a Kungfu movie and a really good one and should be advertised as such. Now that is not that bad, what is bad is the back cover where Pai Mei is dressed as a Samurai holding a Samurai sword. WTF!!! This movie has no Japanese samurai connection. Pai Mei is such a cool bad guy dressed in white throughout the film why did they change this. I know some might not care but as a Kungfu movie fan I like the distrbuters to respect the movies, which Dragon Dynasty has been why they strayed with this movie i don't know. I mean would people like it if indiana Jones was put in a black leather biker outfit why change an already cool look.
Still I would say the movie is well worth buying just ignore the cover or download some fan cover or some picture or draw stick figures with a crayon and use that as a cover anything would be better.

I saw this film in 1983 on Black Belt Theater, I had no idea as to what the title of the movie was at the time because I had no access to a TV Guide to read any description on the movie. Yet what intrigued me the most about the film was as to how the character Priest Pai Mei seemed so unbeatable and the determination of Hung Hsi Kuan to avenge his Shaolin Temple brothers was so deeply conveyed throughout the story. Despite the campy dialogue which is projected from English dubbing, I prefer to view the movie with subtitles and it's original language instead. Masterfully restored quality by Dragon Dynasty as if it were filmed for today's film viewing audience and now gone is the worn down celluloid film reproduction I saw as a young adult viewing it on a local UHF TV outlet.

The print of this film is very good, transfer to DVD medium okay, letterbox is fine, no loss of image. Subtitles are well placed. The kung-fu is very well done, but the plot is long and drawn out, beside that, this is a very good film to watch and enjoy.

Oh yeah, pa mei is definitely the greatest villain of all time and his english dubbing in this slow yet stinging way, makes me even more impressive. The choreography is superb and the scenes here have often been "imitated" ever after. This film and its successor (fist of white lotus) are a must. I always see the 2 the same day.

Gordon Liu has a small intro in this movie, but goes straight to Chen Kuan Tai whom has to deal with the evil Pai Mei played by Lo Lieh. Get this movie then the Fist of the White Lotus. Both are classic and a must have for any Fu fans. The picture quality is crisp and clear with the audio good as well. (The only thing that is funky is the sleeve art work which has Pai Mei's head on a samurai body. LOL)

I just picked this up today at Walmart for $9. I just happened to be walking by and spotted all four of the latest releases from Dragon Dynasty. It made my day to pick this up and I plan on picking up a couple more of the new releases tomorrow.

The DVD transfer looks ok, but nothing extraordiary. The color looks good but the focus can be off at times. The posterization seems minimal and I didn't notice any blocking or any general blurriness of the image that isn't on par with other recent DD Shaw Brothers releases. I just use the TV speakers so I can't offer any useful feedback on the audio.

The film itself is 5-stars, no question it's a classic. It introduced us to the infamous Pai Mei, one of the great characters not only in the history of Kung-Fu but of cinema in general. My question is why no extras??? I suppose I should come to expect this with DD. Don't get me wrong, I love the fact that DD is releasing this at all. But honestly, one or two five-minute extras would be nice.

Also, why are these not simultaneously being released on blu-ray? I'm not sure what kind of investment has to be made to create a blu-ray quality release but if any film deserves it it's this one. Overall it's definitely worth the $9 at your local walmart if you don't want to wait until the 16th to get it via Amazon. And if you already ordered it and have to wait, I'm sorry...
