Executive function and self-regulation are two areas of child and adult development that are fundamental. Executive function has to do with judgment, planning, anticipation of consequences, and self-regulation. Self-regulation is a term that covers capacities for managing emotions, behaviors, thoughts, and memories. Many children and adults have issues with executive function and self-regulation. This brief piece discusses not only what both of them are, but provides guidelines for effective parenting and intervention when issues are present.
