Andy Chambers' Exemplary Life: A Theology of Church Life in Acts is a beautiful, meticulously-argued theology of Church life using the summary passages from Acts 2, 4 and 5. In it, he paints "a portrait of church life so compelling that countless Christians have turned to them for guidance as to what their churches should be" (p. 3). This portrait of the gathered Church turns out, as Chambers convincingly argues, to be one of the reasons Luke wrote Acts.

Using the best methods of contemporary biblical scholarship, Exemplary Life is careful to avoid traps set in historical criticism and in New Criticism. He respects the wealth of biblical data about the Church, but sets out to use those very tools to demonstrate that Luke is not only a faithful theologian and historian, but he's also a good writer of great literature, drawing from the wealth of first-century rhetorical devices.

I've craved for a biblical theologian to deal with these texts, and do it in a way that genuinely contributes to the Church's life in the twenty-first century. So I found Chambers' work a real treat!

As one whose ordination vows include "living for the Church of Jesus Christ", Exemplary Life brings so much depth to what that vow means. As a theologian committed to bridging exegesis with ecclesial reflection, within the context of the liturgical life of the Church, this book is one to which I'll return again and again.

Every pastor, every church leadership team member, should read, mark, and inwardly digest Exemplary Life. It's an amazing work of solid scholarship with a pastoral heart.

Every pastor and layman should consider the insights to church life that have been lost in our American commuter church syndrome. Recovering a biblical understanding and practice of church life is second only to discovering anew the biblical gospel.
