'Still' Exercises from the Wisdom Tradition, November 7, 2009
This review is from: Exercise Without Movement: As Taught by Swami Rama (Manual, No 1) (Paperback)
This is one of the many sacred books from Bharati, a Wisdom Tradition of the Himalayas. His Holiness Swami Rama, Guru for thousands of disciples and students, has written dozens of books, but this may be the simplest one. Easy to follow instructions with pictures/photos on simple postures makes this a practical book anyone can attempt to follow. In the modern times of chronic tiredness and high stress, these unique `still' exercises for the body, breath and mind are a blessing.
The 'still' work looks extremely simple, but the diligent practitioner experiences that one can reach new levels of awareness of one's own body and mind through stillness. Daily practice of one or more of the exercises will give some good results, but the whole routine given in the book is highly beneficial. The exercises train the body and mind together. The practitioner comes to realize that all our efforts and mental, and the body follows the mind's directions. The book contains nine Parts and four Appendices. The nine Parts detail the virtually movement-less work. The first three Appendices give directions for preparations for practice, diaphragmatic breathing, and savasana (corpse pose) relaxation. The fourth appendix summarizes all the exercises in the book with directions and diagrams. The fourth appendix is very useful for the complete routine of practice. The disciples and students are eternally grateful to the Yogi, Spiritual Guru and Enlightened Master, His Holiness Swami Rama of the Himalayas.

Develop your strength of both mind and body, August 1, 2008
This review is from: Exercise Without Movement: As Taught by Swami Rama (Manual, No 1) (Paperback)
"Exercise Without Movement" by Swami Rama is a great book. I think that this book is one of the best ways to explain to people, who only think that traditional western type isotonic type exercises are helpful, just why visualized tensing exercises and isometrics are so effective.
There is so much wisdom in the book that it is difficult to isolate specific passages, but the following is a good start:
"The exercises in this book, however, are yoga practices with benefits far exceeding ordinary muscular movement. In these subtle exercises one vitalizes muscles, respiration, senses, nervous system, and mind...... Exercise without movement ,however, is a systematic system of exercise that allows the practitioner to travel along the pathways of action from mind to muscle."
"Most importantly, in these exercises one comes to experience the tremendous potential of the mind itself, and one makes the dramatic step inward through the layers of personality toward the center of mind and consciousness".
You can't beat 5,000 years of successful application!
