Biography

Originating in Dunfermline, Scotland in 1969 from the ashes of the semi-professional band The Shadettes, Nazareth -- Dan McCafferty (vocals), Manny Charlton (guitar), Pete Agnew (bass) and Darrell Sweet (drums) - made it big after relocating to London and landing a recording contract with Pegasus records. They released their self titled debut album in 1971 and a second album Exercises 1972. It… Read more in Amazon's Nazareth Store

3.0 out of 5 stars Not joining congregations..., July 2, 2011

This review is from: Exercises (Audio CD)
`Exercises' must have been a bit of a shock to Nazareth fans that had discovered the band post `Razmanaz' or `Hair of the Dog'. Even when compared to the debut, the Scottish band's second LP is very different and would remain a fairly unique collection in the band's catalog. Whereas the first record contained much of the hard rock sound that Nazareth became known for, `Exercises' was just as the title suggests; an excuse to try different styles other than hard rock as much of the album is country, folk, country blues rather than anything really `heavy'. That is not to say the album is a failure or that it stinks rather it is different and a bit eccentric. "Woke Up This Morning" is probably the closest thing to the style that Nazareth would play to perfection and ironically this very track would be beefed up considerably when rerecorded for the next LP. "I Will Not Be Led", "Called Her Name", "Love Now That You're Gone" and "1692" are some of the more notable tracks on `Exercises' and they are almost devoid of hard distorted electric guitar (except in places) as acoustic guitar, mandolins, mellotron and various string instruments fill out the sound. The liner notes say Dan McCafferty's voice was recorded better here than on the debut and he does show his versatility beyond the hard rock caterwauling that he is more famous for. Nazareth stretched their wings a bit on `Exercises' and while not a complete failure it definitely is the missing link so to speak compared with the later heavier hits.

4.0 out of 5 stars before they found their sound they made some good stuff, August 9, 2010

Most nazareth hard rock fans would not give this one four stars, (maybe 2 or 3) and if you are looking for what came later 'razamanaz' type of metal then you might not enjoy this one. However it does have some great songs on it. Everything from the grinding rockin bluesy 'woke up this morning' to simple rock pop songs like 'cats eye" This is a unfocused ablum much like their first one. It's a band trying to find direction which they would find the following year and perfect onward. This isn't a hard rockin exercise it's more of a rock and roll cd with some hard rockin songs but it does have the classic 'glencoe massacre' song on it. I can't see why a few of these songs aren't good enough to be top forty hits. All in all this is a good rock with pop flourishes, and not a later type of nazareth cd. If you don't enjoy rock pop then you may not like this one.
