Our Pediatrician has been using the Exergen Professional model for several years now, and I could not believe it when it became available to the public. I purchased the Exergen Thermometer last week when I thought my 7 month had felt warm. I used the digital under his arm, but I truly don't think you get an accurate temperature. And even though this is my fourth son, I still don't like taking rectal temperatures! I opened the package and went around the house taking everybody's temperature!! So easy, quick and accurate. I read other reviews stating they had a difficult time if the child is moving...what thermometer is easy with a wiggly child? Certainly not rectal or under the arm, and oral always winds up in the wrong spot--and they all take too long to register. Well, now I know, the Exergen is the easiest--with a sleepy child or wiggly child! Wish they had made this when my others were little. Great idea; great product!

I asked a couple of nurses who work with children before investing in an expensive thermometer. They didn't recommend the ear and underarm thermometers, because they can be inaccurate. They said to go with a rectal thermometer or this one. Since I plan to use it for the whole family, including myself, I chose this one. It is accurate enough for a newborn as well as to use on yourself for natural family planning.

I took my own temperature 10 times in a row and got a consistent reading all 10 times. It is extremely easy to use and we've been very pleased with it.

One funny point--as my baby grew older, she became fascinated with the blinking red light, which made it challenging to scan her forehead. She kept turning her head to look at the light!

We used to have an ear-type thermometer. It was never very accurate and we would usually get a difference of up to two degrees if you just angled it slightly different. Not to mention, the kids hated it. Any regular thermometer would require waking them if they were sleeping or begging them to keep it still so we could get a reading. So when I saw this when shopping for other items for our next child, I had to try it. As soon as I received it, I got it out of the box and tested it. I took a reading with the digital oral thermometer first and then this one. The two were extremely close. Then I did the same for my kids...again, very close readings, only I got the reading with the temporal scanner with no hassle. The only time it didn't work was with my husband...until I realized that I had left the cap on. Then it worked fine.

There is a section in the instructions for use that says that you may not get a good reading if there is sweat on the forehead. Since we didn't have fevers at the time, I couldn't test this out. However, in my experience, if a person is sweating from fever, you don't need a thermometer.

I'm just happy to have an alternative to invasive and time consuming readings. Hope this helps someone.

The Exergen is the best temporal scanning thermometer on the market. It works by using heat energy from the artery in the forhead, and calculates the blood temperature very quickly, just like an ear thermometer. Ear thermometers are difficult to use correctly (even by doctors) and are almost impossible to use correctly on small infants.

Plus side: very simple operation. Also very accurate. I kept track of my child's temperature every night for 10 days (not sick) using a digital rectal thermometer and the exergen. The difference was on average 0.2 degrees, and never exceeded 0.5 degrees. Very fast, just a few seconds.

Minus side: pretty expensive, but I think worth it. Also, sometimes it takes multiple tries if the child is squirming or sweaty. Still better than a bum probe, though!

I love this thermometer! I purchased the ear thermometer and got such a variety of readings I knew I had to try something different. Then, I went the digital route with the underarm or rectal readings. Those work fine, but sometimes would take just as long to get a reading as the old mercury glass thermometers due to a wiggling or crying child.

Expecting our second child, my mom purchased this for us as a shower gift! What a great find! I took temperatures of my first child, my husband, myself, my mother and anyone nearby! I took each of them several times and got the same readings each time! WOW!

All you have to do is:
1. Press the button,
2. Scan it from the center of the forehead to the hairline (at the temple),
3. Release the button and read the display!

It's so easy. If there is some sweat (like just after a bath or some washcloth wiping) you scan the forehead just as above, but before releasing the button, you place the thermometer behind the ear to get an "additional" reading, then release the button (it's all in the manual!). It works great!

It operates on a 9-volt battery, so no special batteries to buy and store! I would recommed this to anyone, not just an expecting parent!

After weeks of fustrations and inaccurate readings, I put this thermometer away and purchased Braun's Thermoscan. Thermoscan gave me consistently inaccurate low readings so, a year later I went back to reading amazon.com's reader reviews. I was shocked to find that it still received 5 stars and rave reviews from EVERYONE. Went to exergen's website and printed the thermometer's instructions.
My recommendation is to buy this thermometer and use it according to the instructions on the website and not the ones printed on the back of the thermometer; i.e. place the thermometer in the center of your forhead (vertically and horizontally) and while pressing the button, slide it to the side where you don't have bangs, THEN stop pressing the button. The infrared sensor scans your forhead (1000 times per second) in search of the highest temperature. The highest temperature is the correct one.
If you are prespiring, which cools your forhead, do not depress the button until after you finish scanning your forhead and then place it behind your ear. The thermometer will use both these temperatures to arrive at the most accurate one.
I was wrong about this thermometer. It is the best and most accurate one. It was just a matter of learning how to use it correctly. I chart my temperature every moring (read Toni Weschler) and this is the tool to use.

This has been a great thing to have. Although our pediatrician still wants a rectal temp if we call in with a question or concern, we have found the Temporal Scanner to be just as accurate every time. When I have had to take our sons temp rectally I also take it temporally to compare. We haven't had a problem yet. It is so much easier to take his temp with the temporal scanner during the night or during a nap and not wake him. If we ever wear this one out we WILL get another.
The only thing that will affect the scan is if your child has been crying. Crying seems to raise the temp a few tenths and since the scanner takes a reading from the forhead where blood tends to rush when a baby is crying it does affect the reading. We just know that if we check him and he has some temp and he has been crying to check him again a few minutes after he is settled to get a more accurate reading. If he has been crying and it is only a few tenths above normal then we know we don't have anything to worry about.
Not all hospitals are using these yet but I just had surgery a few months ago and they used one of these scanners on me in pre-op and post-op. So, healthcare facilities are jumping on the wagon with these. We love ours.

What a wonderful thermometer to have when your baby is sick and may not want to be poked and prodded. Though I was initially taken aback at the cost of this product, I must admit I'm thoroughly impressed. It scans the temperature right off the forehead, no insertion in ears or any other orifices. I have the other thermometers but hardly ever use those anymore because of the convenience and the gentleness associated with this product. Most impressive and well worth the price. Caution: You do have to read the instructions on how to use it in order to "get the hang" of it. But, once you do, you'll never use an ordinary thermometer again, for child or adult.

I just recently bought this amazing thermomter. It has the greatest design and technology. It's fast, quiet, and accurate. It is a bit costly compared to other styles of thermometers, but when consider you can use it on a sleeping baby, it's priceless.
I would highly recommend it to anyone!

My husband and I saw the nurses use this type of thermometer on our son at his pediatrician's office. At the time, they weren't on the market, but as soon as they were, we got this one. It's so much easier to take our 6 month old's temperature now. It's accurate every time and extremely easy to use. I wish we had been able to get one when he was younger. It gives you a reading as soon as you're done scanning your baby's head (about 2 seconds).
