It's difficult to write a punless review of this surprisingly serious book, which is deep, kind-hearted, and important. 3.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected
I'm giving this 3 stars because it's well written and provides a lot of academic-like info on exhibitionism, but it reads like it began as a dissertation or an in-depth magazine article and was later converted for mainstream reading. It doesn't read like a book for shy individuals looking to change their attitude and behaviors about sex. I expected a how-to text that...

5.0 out of 5 stars Go ahead -- read it, February 18, 1998
It's difficult to write a punless review of this surprisingly serious book, which is deep, kind-hearted, and important. Queen's a reverential philosopher of sex, and she knows something about shyness, too. She admits it takes a good therapist to overcome this stuff, but lets us in on what she does know that might help! She never trivializes or minimizes her readers' hangups; she's a teacher of the best sort. Queen is experienced in all areas -- she's done everything -- and knows and respects human sexuality of all stripes. She wants to teach its happiest and best expression to her readers. Along with some comparatively unusual practices are words of amazing wisdom. Good ideas for ways to think about, talk about, and practice masturbation and safe sex with panache. I might not follow her advice word for word (I'm still too shy), but I loved this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Basically about stripping your own inhibitions, April 3, 2003

Carol Queen is now a famous sex educator who describes herself as a recovering shy person. In 13 chapters and 3 appendices she helps us understand what holds us back from exploring and fully enjoying our sexuality and offers exercises we can use to move into a more fulfilling passionate life with ourselves and with others. This book will not teach you how to strip or how to seduce someone until you feel comfortable with yourself first. An excellent book that offered me some advice I have tried to put into practice in my own life. I'm getting a little less shy every day and it feels good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book, September 18, 2000
If you are the least bit shy regarding your sexuality then this is the book for you! I have seen an enormous increase in my own self confidence (so has my husband!) She breaks down barriers in your shyness and gives you options on how to break out of that mold with ideas, strategies, and examples. I like the way she gives you several options of an exercise. There were some I didn't feel comfortable with but she gave variations so that you can work with it. I definately recommend this to anyone who wants to develop sexual self confidence.

This has to be the best book ever for anyone who is shy either in or out of the bedroom. Don't think that this book is only for partnered people, there are plenty of exercises on being an exhibitionist for your own private fun. And believe me when I say that when you have showed off for yourself you won't be able to wait to show off to others.
This book also gave me greater appreciation for my own body. Flaws and all. Never does she say that you have to be this great beauty to be a show off.
So if you are a "good girl" like me with a "bad girl" fantasy this book is the key to unlocking it.

Carol Queen is absolutely the best. She makes sense out of feelings most people share but are afraid to admit. You should read this little book, especially if you have any shy tendencies. We would all live fuller lives if we could follow half of her truths.

This is the BEST book I have read on Exhibitionism-if you're shy. This is a terrific book and Carol did a great job with it!! I was really impressed! It has changed how I think-I think my shyness was tied in with my closed-mindedness? Well give this book I try either way!! :)

4.0 out of 5 stars "Coming of Age" for the Shy, October 12, 2005
This was my first read by Carol Queen, and I'll definitely be looking for more. Her down-to-earth attitude and very sincere, nonjudgmental, and open-minded approach to writing, sex, and a potentially touchy subject is very impressive.

She's covered nearly every aspect of shyness pertaining to self-image, sexual exploration, and body image; this book isn't just about dressing up and showing cleavage. And let's clarify that it's not just geared toward a female audience either. Queen talks directly, soothingly, to all those wishing to expand their sexual and self-confidence horizons.

I was only amazed to find how far along the spectrum I am myself coming from such shy and conservative beginnings. I was expecting practical steps and creative ideas for "coming out" on my own only to realize just how much of an exhibitionist I already am. And that also credits how Queen begins with exibitionism in private and for oneself, establishing a comfort zone for the individual where it should be begun.

I wish the book included more advanced exhibitionism techniques, or maybe more modern ones. Queen could've ventured into the realm of exhibitionism acted out online in all the various forms, how to begin, safe places for exercising your turn-ons, etc. Still, Queen covers the full spectrum of self-growth and comfort with exhibitionism so comprehensively that there are definitely creative ideas and issues addressed even for the more advanced. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars I sure wish Mom had known Carol Queen., March 7, 1998
By A Customer
This book is such a wise mix of good information, humor, sound and sometimes surprising advice, good slow hand fever, and marvelous appreciation of our humanity and sexual diversity. Hurray for Carol Queen. She makes sex education as warm and open and as much fun as it ought to be.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected, April 12, 2011

This review is from: Exhibitionism for the Shy: Show Off, Dress Up and Talk Hot! (Paperback)
I expected a how-to text that would include background information (it does this), but also provide the reader with situational tips and examples of play, talk, etc., that they could immediately begin applying in their day-to-day life. 'How to transition from shy to un-shy.' It does offer some suggestions, albeit lightly and a little vaguely, but they are sparse and often in the form of brief personal quotes from an individual - something that can be found much easier and in greater numbers online. While it does contain info about how to work through shyness in sexuality, everything is written in paragraph form with specific subjects sometimes bleeding through to other sections of the book regardless of chapter or subheading. I couldn't open the book, go to a chapter, a subheading, and start reading about the topic at hand with much reliability. The content was often buried several paragraphs in and surrounded by anecdotal summaries. If you want success stories, inspiration for changing your attitude about sex, or concrete ideas you can take with you into the bedroom or elsewhere, this is not the book for you. If you want to read about exhibitionism and society, understand shyness and realize you're not alone, this book might be helpful. There is good content here, regardless of focus, and the author writes in a friendly, non-shaming way. Maybe I would have enjoyed this book more if I were shy. Or maybe I've read too many how-to books to switch to a 'study of' type text.

This review is from: Exhibitionism for the Shy: Show Off, Dress Up and Talk Hot! (Paperback)
This book was an easy read, and full of ideas that are actually realistic and simple. I found it informative, honest, and pleasantly straight-forward without venturing into being simply titillating.
