5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous long-awaited solo effort by the most talented Kelly

1.0 out of 5 stars LOL!
The Kelly Family have never been anything more than an over-rated... over-hyped pile of horse-squeeze! A band like this could only go over well in cheesey Europe.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous long-awaited solo effort by the most talented Kelly, January 22, 2004

The Kelly Family is a very unique family band who gained fame touring Europe and performing on the streets throughout the last three decades. Watching the members mature and develop has been a delight, but nothing compares to this long-awaited solo effort by the most popular, and I believe, the most musically talented Kelly sibling--Paddy. Once the teen heart throb of the group, Paddy is all grown up now and bares his heart and soul in this collection of original songs (with the exception of Knick Knack Paddy Whack, of course) which deal primarily with social issues and religion. Paddy's sincere lyrics touch on many subjects such as the price of fame, family love, religious devotion, mental anquish, war, etc... His voice is clear and high and rings with pure clarity. My favorite tracks are "Hope" (which I saw Paddy perform an earlier live version onstage in 2000) and "When You Sleep." My only criticism is that I would have liked to hear more upbeat, rock songs. I know Paddy is quite capable of doing all styles of music and I think more variety would showcase his talents more. But overall, an excellent first effort and I look forward to his next project.

I have a friend from France who is a diehard Kelly Family fan and was very, very excited about this release. Paddy was always her favorite singer. I remember when this came out she told me she thought it was really awful and recommended I never waste my money on it. I'm disappointed in myself for not listening to her advice. Several weeks have passed since I ordered it and I have not even been remotely tempted to play it since the third spin (I always give a new cd a few listens to make sure I'm not just having a bad initial reaction). There really aren't any catchy songs here. There is strong religious content and Mr. Kelly has done some self discovery it seems... but that doesn't necessarily make for a good album. The lyrics are fairly strong, hence the 1 star, but the vocal delivery and melodies are... not memorable. There is also A LOT of repetition with lines in choruses. I mean one line over and over (I understand choruses repeat! lol). I'm in hopes of a better second solo disc.
