Editorial Reviews

In Burma, the Rohingya have been abused, excluded and denied the most basic of human rights, including citizenship. As refugees in Bangladesh and beyond, they have been neglected, exploited and forced to exist in the darkest margins of society. Persecuted and stateless, they are the unwanted and the unwelcome. Exiled to Nowhere: Burma's Rohingya is a photography book by American-born photographer Greg Constantine. The book exposes the stories and plight of one of the world's most oppressed and forgotten people and also provides evidence of their sheer courage to stay alive whatever the ground beneath their feet. It is the second book from Constantine's long-term project, Nowhere People.

Constantine's stark black and white photos capture the suffering, the struggle and the fortitude of the Rohingya. The photos are accompanied by short accounts of the lives of the subjects and collectively these provide an illuminating cross-section of Rohingya experiences, whether as 'state-less' people within Burma or as refugees in neighbouring countries. The book also opens with a succinct history of the Rohingya and a time line of their repression within Burma since the early 1960s. I would strongly recommend this.

This ability to address such an important issue and to capture it so movingly is impressive. This book is an intelligent way to bring us deeper into worldly issues beyond the typical centralized governmental disagreements that absorb so much of our mass media today. The images are spectacular and come highly recommended.
