Book Description

Chase Williams is a demon hunter in the Circle, or at least he was supposed to be. On his fifteenth birthday, Chase stepped up to the altar to claim his elemental power, but it never came. Elemental magic is passed down to a hunter through the bloodline, but on Chase's birthday, the bloodline stopped.

Exiled without the Circle's protection, Chase has spent two years trying to survive a world riddled with half-demons and magic. When he has a run in with a frightened and seemingly innocent demon, he learns the Circle's agenda has changed: the Circle plans to unlock a portal and unleash pure-blood demons into the world.

Vowing to stop them, and knowing he can't do it alone, Chase forms a reluctant alliance with Rayna - a sexy witch with an attitude and a secret. In their attempt to stop them however, Chase and Rayna find themselves in the middle of the Circle's plan, leaving one of them to decide what their friendship is worth, and the other's life depending on it.

Merrick offers us a fresh, new take on an old concept. Chase, our male lead was trained to be a Hunter (the good guys) but when he is exiled by his father for not having an elemental power, he and his mother are forced to live on their own, away from the refuge of The Circle. However, just because he's not officially a part of that world anymore does not mean he's not still a target for Demons (the bad guys). One day, during a battle with a demon, he's by another Hunter, Marcus who was working alongside a demon, Rayna. Wait, aren't demons supposed to be bad? This was a huge turning point for Chase because he's forced to rethink everything he's ever learned about Hunters versus Demons.

Chase was a great character because there was so much to him. He was impulsive, protective, vulnerable, strong and a fighter through and through! He did frustrate me at times because he was a bit too impulsive. He meant well, but going off half-cocked usually gets you into more trouble (not less). Rayna was a total badass! I love strong female leads and this chick is as tough as they come, but she too has her share of vulnerabilities. One of my favorite aspects of reading any book is character growth and I loved watching these two characters mature and learn to trust in each other. Of course, we can't forget the secondary characters. Merrick gives us a motley crew of Hunters and Demons who have to work together, even when they're at odds with each other and most of it is quite humorous. (Side note: You'll learn a bit more about them over the course of this week's feature posts *wink*)

As for world building, Merrick gets two thumbs up from this gal. There are actually three worlds in this book and he connected them together almost seamlessly.

4.0 out of 5 stars Action-packed while full of magic and lore! January 17, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
The Protector Series begins by throwing readers right into the action, as do the rest of the books in the series. If you're looking for a lot of action, mayhem, and battle mixed together with elemental magical and the fate of the world falling on one teenager's shoulders, look no further because you've found your series!

Chase grew up his entire life knowing he was a Hunter, destined to purge the world of demon scum. On his fifteenth birthday, when he's expecting to come into his elemental power and join the Circle as a full-fledged member, he's stunned to find out that he's barren. Shunned from the Circle and disowned by his own father, Chase and his mother flee into exile. They've been in hiding for two years and Chase fights the demons he comes across, but a chance encounter with Rayna, a girl of mixed-blood changes everything. Suddenly up is down, and Chase begins to realize that not all demons are evil creatures that need demolishing. Not only that, the Circle is set on opening a portal that will bring Hell to Earth, and only by banding together with those Chase was brought up to distrust can stop them.

One great thing about the series is that even the "Save the World" storyline doesn't take place to the "overpowering romance" of two (or sometimes three, if you're reading a book with a triangle) starcrossed lovers. I don't know about you, but I'm so sick of seeing that in so much of the YA currently out there. There should be a strong balance between the two, especially in fantasy, and M.R. Merrick doesn't disappoint, creating just the right blend throughout the series.

Chase grows so much as a character, and is put through trials and horrors no human being should have to encounter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exiled by M.R. Merrick August 4, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
One of the most interesting parts of this series for me is the fact that it's so different from the general formula for this genre. There's a very different perspective to a male protagonist who's also written by someone who was actually once a teenage male. I got just as frustrated with Chase (in a completely loving way, of course) as I have with all of my guy friends over the years. Things along the lines of 'god, you just don't get girls' and 'really, can't you see Rayna's awesome? Just kiss her already!', and 'why are you being such a dude' (pretty much exact transcripts right there). While there were a lot of thoughts along these lines, as well as eye rolls, and to some that may make it seem like I wasn't enjoying the book, it goes a long way to showing just how much I love the characters and got into the story. My annoyance is the truest expression of affection. Fact.

And I really did get into this story. Merrick creates a world that starts off close enough to the one we know that it's exceptionally easy to fall into. Then, by the end of the book, he's seamlessly woven in an addition in the different dimensions that is so interesting and fanciful, it's incredible. The descriptions of the landscape and residents of Drakar are amazing and so different from Earth, while still allowing the reader to create a vivid mental picture. You just can't help but be swept in as the images play along like a movie.

The descriptions throughout the book are like that: painting a vivid picture of every scene as it unfolds. Whether it's a fight scene or a highly emotional conversation, you're thrown into the thick of it and feel like an invested player. You can't help but feel everything that's happening to the characters and (if you're like me) may even start talking at your book.
