More About the Author

With her home office a Twilight Zone landscape of mannequins in vintage dress, no wonder award-winning ex-journalist and novelist Carole Nelson Douglas's 55 novels range from historical and contemporary mystery and romance to science fiction thrillers to high and urban fantasy. They include two Las Vegas-set series: the Midnight Louie, feline PI, mysteries partially narrated by a "Sam Spade with hairballs" and the Delilah Street, Paranormal Investigator, noir urban fantasies of werewolf mobsters and Silver Screen zombies in a paranormal Vegas.

Douglas was the first author of a Sherlockian series with a female protagonist, diva-detective Irene Alder, the only woman to outwit Holmes, debuting with the New York Times Notable Book of the Year, Good Night, Mr. Holmes. Rachel McAdams plays Irene in the Dec. 25 film with Robert Downey, Jr. as Sherlock. Douglas says if she has a literary muse, it's definitely feline: mysterious, wise, playful, and packing sharp shivs in velvet gloves.

4.0 out of 5 stars From the Back of the Book:, August 1, 2003
Irissa, last of the Torloc sorceresses, had been betrayed by the rainbow gate that was supposed to lead her to the haven world of her vanished people. The hand of Kendric had been torn from her grasp. Then the gate had rejected her into this strange world where a cold moon hung forever unmoving in the sky.

Now she was a prisoner of the Stonekeeper Sofistron. Around her encircled the pale walls of her cell, filled with half-seen reflections of herself. She was helpless, all her power drained into those other-self images. And this time, there was no Kendric to save her. He was a swordless exile in the Rynth, stranded among the Unkept women and the rim-runner outlaws from the magic Stonekeeps.

Somewhere, she knew, there had to another gate, a way out from this hostile world. Somewhere, somehow....

3.0 out of 5 stars A Passable Story, January 21, 2001
I had been reading fantasy novels for about 10 years or so before I read this book. I found the book quiet tedious to read on some occasions and quite easy and exciting during others. The book never really drew me in. I did feel some affinity with the main characters but they could also be quite frustrating at the same time. I would advise this book be approached as just an average book with some above average moments. All in all, not a bad read but it could have been so much better.
