Volume 2 of Exiles Ultimate Collection contains issue #s 20-37 (and a short story from X-Men Unlimited). Something about this set of stories just feels off when compared to the preceding volume. Perhaps it's the fact that team leader (and audience surrogate) Blink is absent for the bulk of the stories and is replaced by a thoroughly unlikable version of Ilyana Rasputin. There's a chunk of issues written by Chuck Austen (which ties in with his X-Men run from the early 2000s) in which the Exiles visit the mainstream Marvel Universe and encounter the X-Men. One would think this would make for a great story, but it's overlong and tedious. In fact, most of the stories here are 3-parters and wind up overstaying their welcome. There's little imagination to each world that the Exiles visit, since every one seems to be postapocalyptic (i.e. a world where the Legacy Virus combined with the Technarchy to overtake the planet, a world where Tony Stark took over, a world where Captain America was turned into a vampire) The strongest stories in the volume are two done-in-ones that veer away from the "saving the world from evil versions of Marvel superheroes" stuff and instead tell smaller-scale tales that see the Exiles split up and visit worlds that have a true emotional impact on them. The volume concludes with a story in which the Exiles revisit the origin of the Fantastic Four and must set everything on the correct path. By this story's end, Exiles feels like it's back on the right path too, after a lengthy detour. Volume 2 is still good, but it will make you want to breeze through it to (hopefully) find better stories in Volume 3.

After reading the first volume, I became an instant fan of the Exiles. Book two picks up right where book one left off. Filled with fun story, good art work, and interesting characters. This book has everything a superhero fan would want from a book. If you liked the first volume, buy this one too. You won't regret it.

Made me feel good just reading such an awesome book. Superb art that I wish more books would use by the master Mike McKone. And funny engaging writing by Judd Winick. I will read this over and over again.
